When I insert a cross-reference, right now, I have to first activate the text field to type the piece of text I want to reference.
For me it would be much more efficient if the cursor were already in the search field so I can start typing as soon as I use the tool.

This is probably a Windows-specific issue because the search field is active on macOS when the dialog opens.

@MikeTO The numbers of time you had to say this regarding cross-reference features is getting crazy. Windows users are missing out on so many things atm. This is one of those things where I start to wonder if I didn't report it, does anyone even test feature parity across platforms? 😌

The issue "[Win] Windows When inserting a Cross-Reference the Search from start files is not active" (REF: AF-1747) has been fixed by the developers in internal build "2.5.0.2317".
This fix should soon be available as a customer beta and is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
