Using Add Pages from File… doesn’t give the expected results…

Source: Right-hand facing, nine-page document, containing two Sections labelled as follows:

Pages 1 to 3 - Section 1
Pages 4 to 9 - Section 2

Target: New Single, Facing Page Document with Non Deletable, Default Section 1 - Page 1 to 1

Note: Ignore Initial Section is only an available option when using either After or After Last Page


Tests using Add Pages From File…
 

Test 1 - All Pages, Before Page 1 (or Section 1)

  • Correctly adds all nine pages before page one
  • Fails to carry over Section 1 name from the source document
  • Page 10 becomes Section 3 and restarts Page numbering


Test 2 - All Pages, After Page 1 (or Section 1), Ignore Initial Section Unchecked

  • Adds an additional blank Left Hand Facing Page to maintain the source document starting on a Right Hand Facing Page
  • Page 2 in the new document is labelled as 'Section 1, Page 1' but blank
  • Page 3 in the new document is now the first page of the source document but numbered as Page 2
  • Page 10 has overflow text instead of creating an 11th page


Test 3 - All Pages, After Page 1 (or Section 1), Ignore Initial Section Checked

  • Adds an additional blank Left Hand Facing Page to maintain the source document starting on a Right Hand Facing Page
  • Page 1 in the source document now appears as Page 3 in the target document
  • Page 1 in the new document adopts Page 1 numbering from the source document
  • Pages 2 to 4 fail to carry over the Section name from the source document
  • Page 5 which should be the last page of Section 1 now appears as the first page of Section 2
  • Page 10 has overflow text instead of creating an 11th page


Test 4 - All Pages, Replacing Page 1 (or Section 1)

  • Creates the correct number of pages with the correct page numbering
  • Pages 1 to 3 fail to carry over the Section 1 name from the source document
  • Page 9 fails to carry over the Section 2 name


Test 5 - All Pages, After Last Page, Ignore Initial Section Unchecked

  • As Test 2


Test 6 - All Pages, After Last Page, Ignore Initial Section Checked

  • As Test 3


Test 7 - Section, Section 1, Before Page 1

  • Fails to carry over Section 1 name from the source document


Test 8 - Section, Section 1, After Page 1 (or Section 1), Ignore Initial Section Unchecked

  • Adds an additional blank Left Hand Facing Page to maintain the source document starting on a Right Hand Facing Page
  • Page 2 in the new document is labelled as Section 1, Page 1 but blank
  • Page 3 in the new document is now the first page of the source document but numbered as Page 2
  • Fails to carry over the third page of Section 1 page from the source document
  • Links the text frame on Page 4 to the non-existent Left Hand Facing Page before Page 1


Test 9 - Section, Section 1, After Page 1 (or Section 1), Ignore Initial Section Checked

  • Adds an additional blank Left Hand Facing Page to maintain the source document starting on a Right Hand Facing Page
  • Fails to carry over the Section name from the source document
  • Page 3 in the new document is now the first page of the source document but numbered Page 3
  • Fails to carry over the third page of Section 1 page from the source document
  • Links the text frame on Page 4 to the non-existent Left Hand Facing Page before Page 1

Thanks for your report @Hangman & the in-depth information provided, this has made testing and replicating the issues raised much easier.

I've been able to repeat the behaviour you've reported above, and noted a few differences when testing the same workflows on Windows (a few of your scenarios cause crashing instantly on Windows) and therefore I have logged this with our development team for further investigation.

Interesting that you're seeing differing results with some of the same workflows when testing on Windows along with some crashes...

The issue "Add Pages from File with Sections produces unexpected results, with platform differences or crashes" (REF: AF-1681) has been fixed by the developers in the latest beta build (2.6.3.3273). The fix is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Affinity Info Bot to notify us.
