Fringing visible on images in Affinity exposure X7 but not when editing on Affinity Photo - is the fringing in the photo or is there a setting problem?

I constantly see purple fringing in my photos when uploaded into Exposure X7 which I struggle to remove using the defringe controls. However if I simply go from Exposure X7 and edit in Affinity Photo the fringing problem is not there without me even touching the photo. So I am not sure whether the original photo has a fringing problem or something in the upload has created it in exposure or affinity photo is cleverly correcting it on the way in when I invoke edit. I know this sounds odd but this is really what I am seeing!

It might help if you could attach the original photo. This looks more like a colour cast over the whole image rather than fringing, which normally affects the edges in an image. (https://affinity.help/photo/en-US.lproj/index.html?page=pages/Filters/filter_defringe.html?title=Defringe)

Thank you for taking a look. Below I have 3 images which are:

1. original image loaded into Exposure X7

2.original image with auto applied to get rid of colour cast (but close up I still see fringing in hair etc.)

3. Image when displayed via Affinity Photo 2 with no editing from being imported in via the edit option. I have then expoted it and resized to reduce file size for uploading.

I should mention that the top being worn is actually pink so actually the 2nd image is closer to correct based on the top being worn but skin colour looks more corect in 3rd image and there is no perceived fringing in 3rd image.

Appreciate you taking time to look at this.

Both the first and second images in your post are entirely identical for me when opened in Photo, the histogram doesn't move. Is this intentional or have you unintentionally uploaded the same image twice?

And to clarify, has the top image been imported/exported out of Exposure X7 before you've uploaded it here, or is it the completely unmodified original image?

Just to make sure I have repeated the process which is:

The first image was imported from a camera SD card and has not ben modified in any way. I then exported it.

The 2nd image was the first image but with auto applied which has made minimal change and then I exported again.

The 3rd image was when I took the first image (from the SD card) via the "edit in affinity Photo 2" option from exposure X7, it then displayed as shown (in Affinity Photo 2) which I then simply exported as a jpg.

I can understand the original colour cast as this was taken in a room with a warm LED ceiling light. I think the auto could not do much about it because there was no strong black or white for it to anchor to, but when it went into Affinity Photo 2 and this immediately changed the color, particularly the purple, this is what I do not understand.

Why using the "Exposure X7" plugin when it's so easy in Affinity Photo?
My monitor is calibrated (Datacolor software), which is recommended if you want to edit photos correctly.
From the original photo it is difficult to estimate what the wallpaper originally looks like, but in any case ....
The original (1st) image containes a magenta color cast.
Your third image has a yellow color cast, perhaps intended as a warmer representation.

Many thanks for your feedback and the image you returned is very close to correct. I will try and work directly with Affinity Photo but I just feel a bit frustrated at the color cast in each instance which I am seeing when I am simply importing in each app. I will however have a go at calibrating my IMAC monitor with Datacolor software as you have done. Are there settings in Affinity Exposure and Affinity Photo where I can select the calibration that the software should use in each instance?

Thanks again

The color cast in your shot is caused by the color temperature of the light source that illuminates your scene at the time you take the photo, whether or not in conjunction with an incorrect color balance setting in the camera!!
So, whether you import the photo into Exposure X7 or Affinity Photo or into any other photo editing program, the color cast will inevitably be visible.

Calibration should be repeated at regular intervals (preferably monthly) and under the same conditions. I use "Datacolor Spyder Pro" for this, but there are other brands that confirm the same result.

Hi,

I've been searching the Forum for a problem I've been having since updating Photo v2.3 just a few days ago and this thread seems to be very similar to the one I'm having, namely a colour cast sometimes green, sometimes red, when I open dng images in Photo 2.3.

The effect appears to be fairly random and can occur on one image and not on the next frame on what is essentially the same image. I have found that if i open the effected images in software other than Affinity and then export, without doing any proccessing whatever, as either a tif or tiff file, i can then work on those files in Affinity 2.3 as normal.

This has only happened since I updated to v2.3.

I'm using a calibrated monitor and I've opened the affected images with 3 other apps without the colour cast.

I'll uninstall v2.3 and reinstall v2.2 and let you know the result

@albas

Unlike the OP's JPEG image format, DNG (digital negative) is a type of raw file (I suppose you already know) that will open in "Develop Persona" (AF 16-bit RAW editor), making it a bit more complicated to determine.
It would be useful to provide some file(s) so we can look at.

Hi,

After much messing about I've realised that the problem is not Affinity and is something to do with the colour profiles or Win 11, but I've not yet figured out what the exact problem is.

Something very similar happens when I open the affected files in Raw Therapee.

Having decided that the problem wasn't Affinity or Raw Therapee I've updated Affinity to v2.31 on my Win 10 PC and there are no problems with either Affinity or Raw Therapee on that machine. I'm now trying to solve the problem on my Win 11 Laptop where the problem occurred.

Sorry to have raised the matter on this forum.

Hi,

After further investigation it appears that the problem is caused by the the RAW processor misinterpreting or altering the Black Point value in the EXIF data in DNG files.

I found this post https://discuss.pixls.us/t/dng-in-raw-therapee/41461/12 on the Raw Therapee forum site and followed the Advice of using EXIF GUI to reset the Black Point value to 0. I then retried using Affinity to process the affected images and that worked fine, they were back to normal.

I don't know if this is a problem with Affinity and Raw Therapee or with DNG or something else but there is certainly an issue with something
