80sTherapy Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Hello, I'm currently working on various app icon variations, and one of them is inspired by the old Simon Says electronic game (for those who remember it). Attached is a preview, and I've been asked to incorporate a background similar to the one in the "Rosé Pine" image. However, the request is for a dark base color instead of the light one, with color gradients that align with the blue/yellow/green/red hues used in the donut shape. I have a couple of questions: Regarding the "Rosé Pine" gradient, I'm unsure how it was achieved. It appears to be conical, but I don't see the typical conical center. Please note that "Rosé Pine" was created in Figma, not Designer. From a graphic design perspective, I'm concerned that a gradient with a dark base color and multiple colors might make the icon overly busy, considering the variety of colors in the logo. What background do you believe would work best, considering the multitude of colors already present? Your insights are much appreciated. Cheers, Quote
firstdefence Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 It looks like a conical Gradient with Gaussian Blur Applied, so a white rounded rectangle with another rounded rectangle of the same size nested inside and a conical gradient and gaussian blur applied. The name of the electronic game is actually just "Simon" but it seems a lot of families who had one back in the day (including my own) called it "Simon Says" I guess because of its similarity to the child's game. The app's dev gave me a reference website with a black to purple gradient he wants to try. As it turns out, the background gradient used on the Rosé Pine image is not conical, but three linear gradients combined together. Quote

It did not take long for a lot of kids to figure out that command chains did not have to be complicated to ensure elimination. One such chain was "Simon says jump up! <pause> Down!" This caused a lot of arguments over the admissibility of impossible to obey commands like defying gravity. 😀 Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.6 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7

The same result can be had by using blobs of colour and blur but I like how the conical gradients works and as long as the left node and right node are the same colour you get a nice smooth gradient without any need for blur, although blur does give a nice diffused effect and softens the colours. In the US that game is called Telephone. It is sometimes played by people of all ages at parties & even as an experiment demonstrating how facts can get distorted. v_kyr 1 Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.6 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7
