Digbydo 2 Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 I came across several effects on the Pixelbuddha web site, such as Prism Dispersion & Collage Photo Effect but both these effects and others only mention using photoshop. I have emailed them to ask if they can be used within Affinity but have had no response as yet. So… can effects (from this site or any others) designed for Photoshop be used within Affinity Photo& if so is there a way of knowing what can and cannot be used? Failing all that are there any websites out there tat do offer different 'Effects' that can be used within Affinity Photo? Thanks for any help given. Quote
firstdefence Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Action files cannot be used .atn, some mockup PSD files can be used but it can be trial and error with them, certain plugins will work such e.g. Jixipix, NIK Collection and Topaz, extensions will not work nor any plugin that uses a panel, so some extensions will be called plugins but if they show a panel of buttons and setting it will not work with Affinity Photo. In order to match these files in Affinity Photo as close as possible to the effect in Photoshop, I'd recommend enabling the below options under Settings > General: 18 hours ago, Digbydo 2 said: is there a way of knowing what can and cannot be used? As firstdefence mentions above, 'Action Files' for Photoshop are not compatible with Affinity apps at this time. PSD files will import into Affinity, matching as close as possible to the effects used in Photoshop, but this will be on a file-by-file basis and therefore unfortunately we cannot guarantee any of these will import exactly as expected, or with the same level of editability as given when opening the PSD in Photoshop. Our apologies we can't be more specific regarding these files! Quote

Digbydo 2 Posted December 14, 2023 Author Posted December 14, 2023 Thank you firstdefence ~ I understand most of what you've said. However, some of the lettering used is beyond me. (you can tell I'm pretty new to this game) Lettering such as .atn ? & PSD? I think once I understand what they mean I'll finally 'Get it'. thanks for your help. Quote
Digbydo 2 Posted December 14, 2023 Author Posted December 14, 2023 Thank you Dan C for your explanation and for indicating what setting's to set. I'll do those and then have another go at it. as I said to firstdefence I still don't know what a PSD File is so I don't know what to look out for when I'm looking on sites such as pixelbuddha. Thanks for all your help. 🙂 Dan C 1 Quote
firstdefence Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 Photoshop has a scripting language, that can make actions (Macros) basically a recording of actions you perform in Photoshop, they call these; appropriately enough Actions, these actions are stored as .atn files that you can load into photoshop. Affinity cannot interpret these action files because it doesn't use adobe's scripting language. A PSD file is a proprietary Adobe file associated with Photoshop, Adobe are probably the best to explain what a PSD file is: https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/file-types/image/raster/psd-file.html Affinity can open a PSD file and can save as one too but if the PSD file came from Photoshop it may have processes and have used features that are specific to Photoshop and that Affinity cannot replicate. firstdefence Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 From the Pixelbuddha website, you can use the fonts as long as they are static fonts, font's come in various forms and filetypes, e.g static, variable, colour and file types .otf, .ttf, .wolf etc, Affinity can only read static fonts at the moment but we are hopeful that Affinity will be able to read Variable and colour fonts in the not to distant future. Brushes: Photoshop has a brush file format called .abr these can be loaded by Affinity and 9x out of 10 you won't have any problems but some brushes may not load as they would in photoshop, these tend to be textured/pattern brushes but a lot are ok. The textures, vectors, graphics and photos will be ok as long as they are in a file format Affinity can interpret. Addons: It depends what these addons are but because they appear to be only for subscribers I can't really comment on them as I don't know what their content is.
