RustyDawn Posted December 11, 2023 Posted December 11, 2023 Hi. I'm trying to follow this video at 0.56s (link at bottom). When he makes a selection of any item and creates a mask using the selection, the newly created mask is added as a "mask" rather than child layer or clipping mask to the target Compound Mask layer. You can notice this by seeing that his masks are visible next to the thumbnail of the Compound Mask layer. Also confirmed by the extra dark color of that layer and a double bordered layer-separator which makes it clear that it's not a child layer but rather a mask layer which doesn't depend on z index. If I try to do same (document attached), I can't do it. It is added as a child layer instead as shown in screenshot: So why there is different behavior? Am I doing something wrong? compound masks1.afphoto Quote
walt.farrell Posted December 11, 2023 Posted December 11, 2023 Check the Assistant options in your application Settings. There's one that controls how the operation of adding Mask layers to a selection works. RustyDawn Posted December 11, 2023 Author Posted December 11, 2023 Hi. I don't have much experience with it. I can see these settings in Assistant Manager but not sure which option does what. I would really appreciate if you could elaborate: Quote

I would suggest experimenting with the settings in the Mask dropdown to learn how they work. Behind that I can only suggest reading the Help: https://affinity.help/photo2/en-US.lproj/pages/Workspace/preferences.html Quote -- Walt Designer, Photo, and Publisher V1 and V2 at latest retail and beta releases PC: Desktop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 64GB memory, AMD Ryzen 9 5900 12-Core @ 3.00 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Laptop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 32GB memory, Intel Core i7-10750H @ 2.60GHz, Intel UHD Graphics Comet Lake GT2 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU. Staff MEB Posted December 11, 2023 Staff Posted December 11, 2023 Hi @RustyDawn, Thanks for raising this issue. The current Release and Beta versions are indeed adding the masks as children to the Compound Mask layer rather than masks, differing from video's behavior (which was made using an older version). I'm checking with the dev team whether this is intentional or not. Thanks. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
firstdefence Posted December 11, 2023 Posted December 11, 2023 Ive just tried this with your file and it appears to work fine on Mac Ventura AP v 2.3.0 Select the compound Mask layer. Cmd + click on the red sausage layer in the group to create the selection. Go to the Mask Icon at the bottom of the layers panel and click, this adds a mask layer to the compound mask layer. I repeat step 2 for the black sausage and it adds another mask layer with boolean add selected. Maybe it's a bug that's fixed in recent versions. Quote

Can you post a video please? Thanks. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
