Sorry, We do not support this.

On iPad with "Force Pressure" enabled (which is typical when using the Pencil) a hover preview cannot indicate the resulting mark that will be made since the angle and pressure is unknown (not provided by the OS) and so not previewed.

Hi! I'm talking about rotation, not pressure. And on the desktop with hover its the same, but works fine.

I have rephrased my post. The angle and pressure information is not available to the developers on iOS as I understand it.

@Patrick Connor do you have any update on this issue by chance?

Unfortunately this is pretty much a requirement for me when drawing, as I need to see the shape of my cursor as well. I understand that iOS doesn‘t report tilt and pressure information, but just having a preview for the rotation would go a long way already.

Update: It seems like tilt is also being reported while hovering now. At least Procreate supports it and updates the brush cursor size according to the pencil tilt.

@Mikerooni

Welcome to the Affinity forums :)

I believe we are improving the iPad Pencil hover / rotation support in future versions, yes.

<edit> turns out some support is already in place, see below</edit>

Thank you!

Happy to hear this is planned / being worked on. Looking forward to seeing this is a future version then - I’ll keep an eye out for it in the beta program and will try to do some testing whenever it‘s ready ^^

Hi Mikerooni,
The Apple Pencil Pro now supports Barrel Roll and we've tied this to the 'Rotation' controller for brush dynamics. This means that in Affinity if you set the 'Rotation' dynamic's controller to 'Rotation' you can change the brush's rotation by rotating the pen's barrel. Alternatively you can do things such as set the Hue dynamic to Rotation, and gradually change the colour by rotating the barrel too.

I've attached a quick video demonstrating the Rotation dynamic being set to a rotation controller with the Apple Pencil Pro.

Thanks for the demo video @Sean P - I just tested this and can confirm that this works as well for me with barrel rotation.

It seems like the brush preview cursor just doesn’t handle the "angle" and "tilt" parameters. However, they do work as expected in the actual brush stroke.

For an example, you might want to use something like the "Tone On Tone" brush from the builtin markers category:

When hovering, the preview cursor is always oriented horizontally. During brush strokes, the brush‘s actual rotation adapts to the angle parameter, as expected.
