pstandiford Posted December 3, 2023 Posted December 3, 2023 I have a file that I created in 1.10.8 which would not export a specific font correctly to PDF. When I printed to PDF it would work okay but since I needed to export hyperlinks that didn't work. So, I opening it in 2.3.0. When I tried to export to PDF I found a different problem. If I checked "Include hyperlinks" the preview would not render. I tried to Export anyway and when it tried to save it gave an error message of "An error occurred while exporting to: <path>". When the "Include hyperlinks" was not checked the preview would render immediately. I went ahead and exported to see if it would export and it did without any problems. The surprising thing is that when I opened it all the hyperlinks worked even though I had unchecked "Include hyperlinks." This worked okay for me but might not always want to export and include the hyperlinks. Quote
Hangman Posted December 3, 2023 Posted December 3, 2023 Hi @pstandiford and welcome to the forums, Are you able to upload your Affinity file so we can take a look at what might be going on or even a sample page using the same fonts that includes one or two hyperlinks? pstandiford Posted December 3, 2023 Author Posted December 3, 2023 This is three pages of the entire document. I discovered in some additional testing that I can export the first and third page without any problems. However, the second page does not generate the preview and will not export. The first and third page generates the preview very quickly and will export. Seems there might be an issue with the second page but I'm not sure how to find it. The third page has more hyperlinks than the second page so if there was going to be a problem I would think it would be on the third page. Test.afpub Quote
pstandiford Posted December 3, 2023 Author Posted December 3, 2023 Just a bit more testing. I find that the second page will generate the preview and export just fine IF I uncheck "Include hyperlinks". Quote
Hangman Posted December 4, 2023 Posted December 4, 2023 Hi @pstandiford, Many thanks for the test file... The issue appears to be somehow related to the formatting just before the 'MSCA Newsletter Editor' text... Gradually deleting elements from Page 2 revealed that starting from the end and working backwards, deleting everything after the 'Chaplain' email address results in the page previewing but including any text after that results in it no longer previewing which makes little sense. I've simply rebuilt that page and it all appears to be fine now... I've aligned the text across the two columns which you may or may not want but there is nothing obvious causing the issue that I can see so it's all a bit of a mystery... pstandiford Posted December 4, 2023 Author Posted December 4, 2023 Thank you for the help. At least I know that it wasn't just some setting that was causing the issue. I have used this same page for quite some time with no issues. It only became an issue when I started using Version 2 of publisher. A bit strange. Again, thank you. Quote
pstandiford Posted December 4, 2023 Author Posted December 4, 2023 I did a bit more testing with the document you sent back. I exported it first with "Include hyperlink" checked and everything seemed to be as it should. I then exported it with "Include hyperlink" unchecked. The hyperlinks on the third page were formatted as hyperlinks but they only the email hyperlinks would work. The hyperlinks on the second page, the ones you rebuilt were still exported as hyperlinks. All the email ones worked with the exception of the bottom one on the left column. So there are still some quirks even in the rebuilt one. Once again, thank you for your reply and assistance. Quote
Hangman Posted December 5, 2023 Posted December 5, 2023 Hi @pstandiford, I suspect the reason you're seeing the email links still working is down to a setting in the PDF Reader you're using, e.g., in Acrobat Reader, under the General Preference settings there is an option called 'Create links from URLs' which when checked will automatically try to create a link out of anything it recognises to be a URL regardless of whether 'Include Hyperlinks' is checked when exporting the file to PDF. If I uncheck that option in Acrobat Reader and export your file without 'Include Hyperlinks' checked then none of the email addresses are hyperlinked in Acrobat Reader, but with the setting checked in Acrobat Reader then all the email addresses on both Pages 2 and 3 are hyperlinked even when 'Include Hyperlinks is not checked when exporting to PDF.. The same is true if I open the PDF in Google Chrome but not Firefox... Which PDF Reader are you using... pstandiford Posted December 6, 2023 Author Posted December 6, 2023 I am using Apple Preview. I opened an old PDF I had and saw the effect you referenced when hovering over an address. There was no email addresses in the document so I could not test that. In addition, I could not find a way to turn that feature off in Apple Review. I did open in Adobe Reader and found the same as what you described. I opened file and had hyperlinks, changed the setting and the hyperlinks were gone. Thanks again for your insight. Hangman 1 Quote
Hangman Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Hi @pstandiford, The open to 'Create links from URLs' isn't one that's available in Apple Preview but is available, as you've seen, in Acrobat Reader and it is also an option in Foxit PDF Reader as well...
