One thing that has always bugged me about Designer is if I open a different file type, such as an SVG and Save it, it prompts me to save it as an .afdesign file.  No, I'm editing a SVG file, I should be able to just save it without going through Export and thus creating a new file.  Trying to use a pipeline for character creation in a 2D animation application, but cannot get it to work because when I export it, it creates a new file thus breaking the link with the animation application.

The suggestion is if creating a new file, prompt to save as .afdesign, but if editing a file, save should just save it as that file type.

-1, for many reasons.

In my opinion, already APh being able to save directly over JPEG or PNG is a bad idea because the Save UI doesn't offer any of the options that the Export dialog offers.
Example:

  1. opened a small and optimized 85 KB jpeg
  2. made a small edit with a brush
  3. saved, there was no dialog whatsoever
  4. the jpeg was now 285 KB

No go.

What should the software do if you have added elements to the document which are incompatible with the SVG format and then try and save the document to replace the existing file?

What do you mean by “breaking the link with the animation application”?

Have you tried opening the SVG in Designer, then Saving as a Designer document, then exporting to the original filename via the Export Persona (and have you tried the “Continuous” setting to make the export automatic)?

See attached video for an example.

Personally, I would like the option to save in the original file format - if the user is aware of the risk and allows it in the Preferences.

Today, unfortunately, it is completely inconsistent - some formats can be saved, others not, so it is unnecessarily confusing for users, and ultimately very risky, because they think that Affinity will always prompt to save as *.af, and the file will be unintentionally overwritten.

Designer is NOT an SVG editor as Inkscape (for example) is.  When you "open" the SVG in Designer it converts the supported part of the SVG file into its own native format, which does not support animation.  You are not editing SVG any more - you are editing a Designer document which was populated by copying things out of the SVG.  Anything that was in the file that Designer cannot translate would not have come across, so whether the "Save" option is permitted to overwrite the original file, or you explicitly export it in the menu (which is what Save would be doing anyway if they did enable it as a shortcut), the animation would already be gone.
