First day of trial. Affinity2 edited files (.afphoto) do not open in Apple Photos. “Unrecognized file type”

I expect seamless (Photoshop-like) integration with Apple Photos.

Is Affinity2 not up to my expectations?

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

Apple Photos cannot open .afphoto files. This is by design, not a bug. You would need to Export a raster-based image file, such as TIFF, JPG, or PNG.

There is integration between Apple Photos that would allow you to start in Apple Photos, select an image, send it to Affinity Photo, and have Affinity Photo return it. But that would not involve .afphoto files.

I will defer to someone else to describe what you should do for that workflow, as I'm primarily a Windows user and I would not do a good job of explaining the workflow between Photos and Photo.

Adding to Walt's comments, although Apple Photos supports Adobe PSD import, unfortunately Apple Photos does not support Affinity .afphoto files. There is nothing Serif can do about that, only Apple.

You can of course export from Affinity as PSD files if you want to do that.

My way of working is to select an image in Apple Photos, then select edit in Affinity Photo. Perform your edits and then select save,  you may be prompted to save flattened, if you do that it will save back into Apple photos over the original image. Of course with Apple Photos you can always revert an image back to the original before it was edited if you want to redo your work.

Sometimes I want to keep my work in progress for continuation at a later date, in such circumstances I would save as .afphoto file and store it in a folder structure I created.

Extreme demo of round trip Apple Photos -> Affinity -> Apple Photos then revert image.

Thank you!
I believe you have offered the advice I need: a workflow that allows me to edit with Affinity 2 and round-trip back to Apple photos.

I was not able to find a satisfactory way to do it with Adobe CC Photoshop and Lightroom. Both are good products. But to use them, one seems to be forced into the Adobe ecosystem.

I much prefer the apple photos ecosystem.

Once again – – thanks!!
