Hi,

I exchange documents from Designer via PDF. There are two cases:

a) Export for going directly to the printer. In this case there is no doubt: I choose the Export (for print) option.

b) Export for reuse in InDesign, and be sure to have a copy that someone else can read in Illustrator.

In this latter case I'm in doubt: would Export (for exchange) be the better choice? I would suspect this would work perfectly fine with InDesign (so it seems), and at the same time preserve most of the original situation when opening into another program for editing.

How is it?

Hi PaoloT,

I would suggest trying each to see which suits you best in all honesty. The only way to maintain full compatibility with inDesign is to use inDesign really. But it may be worth checking this thread for user experiences:

Lee, thank you for your answer. Actually, Designer is replacing Illustrator, and InDesign is used to assemble text and images (generated by Designer).

I'll check the thread. In my experience both options work, so maybe I should use the "for exchange" one, to be sure to preserve maximum compatibility with illustration programs (like Illustrator or CorelDRAW).

While it's maybe off-topic, I'll add it here: often, it is not full compatibility that is needed, but great compatibility. For example, the one you are already supplying when doing from InDesign to Publisher via IDML.

Projects have often to be reused, for example in translations of derivative works. They will in any case be reworked. But the less work to go from one project to its sibling, the better.
