Duplicate layers from selection only

Hello, I am trying to duplicate the layer on which I made a selection according to this tutorial: https://youtu.be/cLm3xNoGUMM?t=96 but the whole layer is always duplicated. I would like only the selection to be duplicated :(
How to do it?

Possibly yours is a layer of type "Image" (or "Curve", "Document" et al.) that needs to get rasterized first to achieve a "Pixel" layer and make a pixel selection affect it as expected.
