My old Serif Page Plus X9 could handle footnotes/endnotes imorted from a Word document. Can Affinity Publisher 2 do this straight from the Word document?

Yes, Affinity Publisher 2.2 can import both footnotes and endnotes from MS Word.

You may have to clean up the formatting of the notes after import, the styles aren't always 100%, but there are improvements to that coming in version 2.3. But even without that it takes just minutes to correct the formatting so it's not a big deal.

Does this mean I can import the footnotes direct from Word and they will be sequential? And does Affiniy Publisher wipe out the footnotes' superscript numbers from the Word document?

It just works and nothing is lost, they import as real footnotes and endnotes, not as plain text. Once in Publisher you can change any of the options - there are lot more options for note formatting and positioning in Publisher than in Word.

I have now purchased a universal licence for version 2 and am disappointed to find, after the above exchange of messages,  that on importing a Word document into Publisher 2 the sequential footnotes - 600+ of them - in the Word document come out as footnotes in Publisher but each page restarts the footnote numbering. So, if in the Word  document there are 4 footnotes on one page, 6 on another, 3 on another and so on, each page is respectively numbered 1-4, 1-6 and 1-3 using my example. How can the footnotes be made to run sequentially in Affinity Publisher 2 without a great deal of hassle. It worked like a dream in Page Plus X9. Also, there does not seem to be a mechanism in Publisher 2 to insert a space above or below the footnote dividing line between the text an footnotes.  If it can't be done in Affinity Publisher 2 then it's refund time. The work I do depends on being able to use footnotes throughout a book. Thanks.

Hi Geoff. You can control when footnotes are restarted in Publisher. If you want them to be sequential throughout an entire document, select Document from Restart Every in the Notes panel. Ensure you're doing this for document-wide settings and not custom settings, or get it set up right for one note and convert all notes to document-wide settings.

Use the Positioning > Min Gap Before and Rules > Vertical Offset in the Notes panel to specify the space above and below the dividing line. [EDIT: I previous suggested Min Advance which was incorrect.]

Footnotes are documented in detail in the free manual I've shared in the forum. Link in my signature and an expanded version is coming soon for 2.3.

Slight progress in finding out where various things are but something in the Notes procedure crashed my PC big time. Beginning to regret leaving Page Plus X9.

Thanks for the manual, though. The jusr is out on whether Publisher 2 comes winging its way back to Serif but I have  about 12 days to trial it and get it sorted.
