I'm trying to switch to Affinity Publisher so I don't have to keep giving Adobe money, but I keep running into weird problems.

The current one is that if I put a stroke on letters that are too close together, they overlap each other. If I remove the stroke and add an Outline effect, the Outer Shadow ignores the outline and only shadows the original text.

And while I'm at it, is there a way to force the outline to have hard corners? I'm trying to keep consistency with my logo.

If you want the Stroke to be drawn in a way that is doesn’t overlay the other characters then the “Order: Draw stoke behind” setting in the Stroke Panel should do what you want.

If you want to make the 'corners' of the stroke square you can set the “Join: Mitre join” setting.

Note: I don’t think that you can make the Outline Effect have square corners, but I’d be happy to learn otherwise.

Note: In Photo you can access these settings via the relevant Context Toolbar control (Photo doesn’t have a Stroke Panel).

See attached video for a demonstration of both (video recorded in Designer but it should be the same in Publisher).

If you want something different then we will probably need more details.

Order: Draw Stroke Behind is exactly what I needed, thank you!

I like this method of outlining text.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne63HqO4Pho

That method converts text to curve objects so it is destructive, meaning the text can no longer be edited afterwards,

Fine if that isn't important; not good if it is.
