Numbering restarts after a list below

Hi There – I am trying to create an automatically numbered list of exercises from my book. However, the list of exercises Gets messed up if my exercise itself has any numbered list within it. You can see the behavior here:

If anybody has any ideas for how to make this work, it would be most appreciated! Thank you so much. 🙂  And… I am almost finished with my book!
