The text cursor in Publisher should blink when the document window has focused and be non-blinking when it doesn't have focus. A bug was introduced during the 2.2 beta in which focus is not fully returned to the document window. The cursor doesn't blink but you can type however pressing Delete will delete the text frame because it's being intercepted by the Delete menu shortcut.

This bug was originally reported during the beta as a problem with deleting a space prior to custom fields. It hasn't been fixed yet but that's just one way to trigger it. Here are some of the other ways:

Saving the document: Place the text cursor and see it blink. Save the doc and the cursor will stop blinking. You can type in the document but pressing Delete will delete the text frame.

Edit certain panel options: Place the text cursor and see it blink. Using the Paragraph panel > Flow Options, set Keep with Next to a different value and press Return. The cursor will stop blinking. You can type in the document but pressing Delete will delete the text frame. I tested many fields and some trigger this, others don't, I can't see a pattern except that when it happens the text field will be left with a blue focus ring, perhaps indicating it still has focus even though you can now type in the document.

Edit a sidenote: Often when editing a sidenote the cursor will stop blinking. I haven't figured out the steps to replicate it yet but I'm always deleting sidenote frames by mistake. It might be related to using sidenotes in master page frames.

This issue may be specific to Ventura and Sonoma.

I'm reporting this here because the original 2.2 beta thread is in the archive and I'm unsure if anything other than the custom field trigger is being reviewed.

This isn't triggering the non-blinking cursor for me so subsequently doesn't delete the text frame when using the delete key...

I see slightly different behaviour here... if I manually type a value for 'Keep with Next' in the Paragraph Panel > Flow Options and hit Enter, as you say, the cursor stops blinking and the blue box remains around the 'Keep with Next' text entry box, i.e., the text-entry box appears to maintain focus. Subsequently if I start typing I'm typing in the 'Keep with Next' text entry box, not on the Publisher page.

The only way I can continue typing on page is either to single click in the text frame which results in the blinking cursor again or to switch to another open document tab and back again at which point the cursor is blinking again.

For me, hitting delete doesn't do anything, i.e., it doesn't delete the text frame and it doesn't delete the value in the 'Keep with Next' text entry box.

The cursor will stop blinking under similar circumstances, i.e., when single clicking in any of the editable Sidenote text entry fields and it remains non-blinking after hitting the Enter or Tab keys but a single mouse click back in the Sidenote field or switching the document tab to another open document and back again results in a blinking cursor again.

If you have a Sidenote on a Master Page and your cursor appears blinking in the Sidenote as if you are in the process of editing it, dragging the Master Page to apply it to an actual page will result in a non-blinking cursor in the Sidenote on the Master Page. This time hitting the Delete key will delete the Sidenote Text Frame.

Possibly not in as much as the behaviour, while perhaps slightly different, is still present to differing degress under Monterey. I think we'd need to device a series of specific step by step tests and run them across all three versions of the OS (and earlier) to compare. The above behaviour is the same in v2.0.4.

Hi @MikeTO

From what I can see this bug has been logged against multiple panels and not just custom fields so I don't think a separate log is necessary at this time. I'll keep an eye on this so I can check once a fix makes it into the beta.

Thanks! BTW, this bug started in the same beta version as the one in which the tool mode gets stuck, when you can't place the cursor or select text in a frame. You have to switch tools to clear that one. It could be a coincidence but hopefully they have the same root cause and will get fixed at the same time.

I'm just bumping this bug, it's so easy to delete your text frame by accident. Here's a common scenario.

  1. New doc, draw a text frame, type some text
  2. Change the font family using the context toolbar or character panel - the cursor will stop blinking
  3. Press the Delete key - the frame will be deleted

The issue "Whole text frame is deleted if you use backspace after interacting with a docked panel or when saving a document." (REF: AF-570) has been fixed by the developers in the latest beta build (2.6.3.3273). The fix is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Affinity Info Bot to notify us.
