So Crop still doesn't allow you to select the cropped part of the image and make it a separate image. Even Crop to Layer would be nice and useful. Dare I say as such it's pretty useless as well.

Clip and Unclip Canvas don't seem to serve any useful purpose.

The Help file also doesn't have any search capability.

Uh-huh.
Obviously, what's "useless" for some can be very useful for others who understand what these commands do. ;)

Not sure what you mean there. Crop, Rasterize and Trim, Copy, File > New from Clipboard.

As @walt.farrell mentions, selecting a Layer with right click > Rasterize & Trim does this operation after you use crop tool. The reason it is not done destructively is so that we can recrop if necessary later on.

You can also perform Layer > Merge Visible, which will give you a copy of the image with the current crop, without impacting your original layers.

Thanks for the reminders folks. I say reminders because I knew all this but had completely forgotten. I can only plead aged memory… and a long day.

But it’s great that the constructive comments came in and helped me. Thanks you all.

now I can get on with the job.

If only it did what that says. 95% of the time I try to clip a canvas it has zero noticable result, despite there being swathes of empty pixels all around the edges. There's got to be some other factor involved or it's buggy as anything.

Edit: I just tested and it does what's expected when a layer is rasterised, but if there is an image layer it will not work. A little ironic since I just spent a bunch of time trying to find out if there's a way to automatically rasterise pasted images rather than inserting them as an image and all I found was patronising comments telling people they shouldn't ever want to do that.

If the empty edge regions are being produced by raster masks, Clip Canvas will not give the result you reasonably expect.

If layers/objects exist outside of the canvas, Clip Canvas will not give the result you reasonably expect.

Un-nested Live Filters, Adjustments and Fill Layers can prevent Clip Canvas producing the result you reasonably expect.
