David Brear Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Hi. See my problem? Each line has a space at the end, but not the beginning, where I want one. If I add a space at the beginning of the line Publisher adds it at the end of the line above. Is there a way of adding a 'fixed space' please? Thanks in advance! David Quote
GarryP Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 It looks like you have used a Character Background Fill to achieve that, and that only works where you have characters. (There can’t be a character background where there is no character.) One alternative would be to use Paragraph Decorations (via the Paragraph Panel), but that only affects whole paragraphs, not individual lines. Quote
David Brear Posted October 31, 2023 Author Posted October 31, 2023 Hi Garry — it's just a cream text box with text inside, the text background being green rather then transparent, as you say. I'll check how Paragraph Decorations works, but just having played with it, it doesn't seem to make any difference. Quote

If I add a space at the beginning of the line it has a background. I have Show Special Characters on here so you can see the dots where the spaces are. David Brear Posted October 31, 2023 Author Posted October 31, 2023 Thanks Mike. Interesting - that's not what I'm seeing. I'm using Publisher 2.2.1. One thing which might be relevant is that there's an image to the right of the lines of text, not shown on my pic, but - The image has Text Wrap Settings set to 0.2 cm Square all round. In fact here's my file for that page -Page 16.afpub Quote
MikeTO Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 As GarryP wrote, you can only have a background where there's a character so insert a line break at the end of each line of text and then type a space at the start of each line as shown in this file. If you also want a space at the end of the line you can add that, too. Page 16 v2.afpub Note that you have a darker green background applied to the last period. I'm not sure if that's intentional. Inserting line breaks and typing these spaces is a bit tedious but most people just use the paragraph decorations feature. However, if you want a ragged right edge you have to do it the way you're doing it. If you turn on Show Special Characters in the file you attached & zoom far enough in on the end of the lines, you can just barely make out the symbol showing that there is a space after the last character. It's easy to miss because it is nearly the same color as the text background, but it's there, for instance at the end of "flask." So if you do not want that extra space at the end, delete it, & similarly add ones using the method @MikeTO suggested where you do want them.
