Character panel suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hyphenation = none: Is the "None" option in Hyphenation language redundant? Hyphenation can be disabled at the paragraph level, and No Break can be used to disable it at the character level.

Character Style: Does it need to be included in the Character panel? It's in the Context Toolbar which hardly anybody disables and in the Text Styles panel. It takes up valuable space in the fixed panel area that could be used for something else such as Spelling Language. It's also oddly positioned since everything in the panel can be a child of character style yet it's the last control in the top section.

Spelling language visibility: I'd prefer that Spelling Language was in the fixed top section of the panel to help those who work in multiple languages or who import text from a variety of sources. If Languages is collapsed then you won't notice that you have a mishmash of English UK and US text after pasting from MS Word. You'd only find out if there was a UK vs. US spelling difference with a red squiggly. If you never found out you'd have some text that used the other hyphenation dictionary.

Positioning: I'd also prefer that kerning, tracking, baseline offset, no break, and to a lesser extent, leading override be moved to the fixed top section of the panel. IMO they are far more important than Decorations which is above them in the panel. The Transform controls could remain on their own.

Super/subscript: To avoid confusion between the automatic ones in Positioning and Transform and the real ones in Typography, perhaps change the tooltip for the former to "Auto Super/subscript" or something similar? I also think it's confusing that the automatic ones are accessed via a popup and the Typography ones via toggle buttons in the Character panel and radio buttons in the Typography window.

Standard Ligatures icon: The reuse of the Standard Ligatures icon to open the Typography window from the Context Toolbar isn't ideal. Perhaps a T icon for Typography and reserve "fi" for ligatures?

I like it there for reasons I call "focus inches". It's there, right where I want it when I am doing character work. Focus inches, from Positioning and Transform: about 1. If I have to look at the Context Toolbar, that is taking my focus away a lot of inches. On my screen it is 12 inches away.
