I reported a similar problem with Photo Persona.
I have an linked afpub file. When I change something in it, everything changes in the file it's inserted to, regardless of whether this option is enabled or not. Although the assistant says that the resource was changed externally.

I think the option "Automatically update linked resources when modified externally" refers to another app modifying the linked resource not the same app as you are currently using

E.g. if the linked document was in Publisher but you modified it in Designer/Photo then that option would be honoured

I think that option is irrelevant when using the same app to modify the linked resource, which kind of makes perfect sense (Why would you not want to see the change immediately)

The toast messages that appears saying the linked resource has been modified is just an informative message that will always appear, no matter what the option "Automatically update linked resources when modified externally" is set to

If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

The problem is that Publisher does not have a real resource manager. What Рublisher has now is a resource viewer, nothing more.
When I'm editing a 50-page magazine and preparing photos for printing in a printing house, I shouldn't have to run through all the pages and click on each photo. I would have to open the resource manager and select each photo gradually and edit it. In one place, everything is under control.
Now, I don't even know which photo is processed and which is not. Therefore, updating information manually makes sense so as not to lose anything. Especially considering that the publisher does not even correctly indicate the DPI for photos. It indicates the original DPI, not the one I set when editing.

One of the main tasks of a resource manager is to organize and control resources. And Publisher does not do this. If it partially does something, it does it only with the linked ones, it does not work with the embedded ones. Therefore, if we call it correctly, it is a manager of linked resources.

Here's an example of what the resource manager shows and what is actually there, as Photo shows.

That's sounds like a different issue to the one I initially commentated on and fortunately for me my work does not involve me having to worry about DPI

Hopefully, someone else can address that particular issue for you

There are many such problems. If they are not fixed in time, or if you turn a blind eye to them, they do not resolve themselves, but grow.
The problem with the DPI is another problem, but it has been going on since 1.9.x or 1.10.x

I can confirm that the 'Automatically update linked resource when modified externally' Setting option does not apply to Linked Affinity Documents (.aphoto, .afdesign & .afpub) - these will always automatically update within your parent file when edited.

I hope this clears things up!

But this is not true. Open linked afpub in Designer and the links will not update automatically.

Apologies, my post was missing the clarification of within the same Affinity app of the parent file, as Carl mentioned above in this thread.

The 'Automatically update linked resource when modified externally' Setting option is functioning correctly for me when editing an .afpub in Designer - in that with the option enabled the Linked .afpub updates, and without the option disabled the linked .afpub does not update - therefore I'm not seeing any bug with this setting, at this time.
