If you used the MSIX version it would happen automatically. That's one of the benefits and reasons that Serif decided to use that technology for V2. The EXE versions continue to work as they did in V1.

But perhaps they wll consider doing that for the EXE, too.

Here is one reason to do an automatic update

Or, that is a good reason for Serif to improve their website, so when a user of the EXE says Download they get to the right spot to download their version, rather than getting to a page where they have to make a choice. Several of us have complained about that.

Especially because the big download button is for the msix versions
And the exe is a tiny link.
It should be directed to the used version imo
(I still have a feeling that Serif is forcing the msix upon us because MS wants this)

so when a user of the EXE says Download

If the user says "Download", then one would expect the installation file to be "downloaded" (and of course for the correct type of installation). Not that it jumps to a page where the user has to choose from the options offered, and then click "Download" again.

That's how the EXE files have always updated, except that in V1 the user did not need to make a choice of the correct  format when they got to the web page.

Yes, everyone knows that. And that is why it is required:

I doubt that Serif will do something that complex. Much more likely they will just fix the website so the user doesn't have to make a choice. And that would be my preferred implementation as it leaves the developers more time to do other functions that are more important and benefit all users.

3 options;

  1. Make the information and the download buttons equal sized/colored.
  2. Make the download links point to a page per version aka a page for the exe version and a page for the msix version.
  3. Make the download link in the programs directly (download) the exe or the msix version installers instead of linking to a webpage.

If you consider downloading an exe file to a temporary directory and running it to be "complex", then I'm not surprised by your negative reactions to any requests in most cases. By the way, this "complex" task is handled by the vast majority of even simpler applications.

I didn't say it was complex. I said "that complex", in comparison to simply adjusting the web page that Download directs you to.

The EXE for V2 is working the same, other than needing to make a choice, as the EXE for V1. I don't remember seeing requests for this change to V1, at least none saying it was "required". I may have missed them, of course.

But to me, the issue is with having to make the choice, so I'm proposing the simpler fix for that.

This is not the case because
1. you need to create two download pages - one for msix and one for exe (because no matter how big or identical the buttons are, it will be confusing for many users).
2. Write lines of code in each version to go to the appropriate page.

In the case I'm suggesting, you don't even need to create a page. The files can be on the server and the program will download them from there.
