Tremaine Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 Hello, System: Windows 10 Home 19045.3570, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40 GHz, 32.0GB RAM, 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080. Disclaimer: I have never used any publishing software before, nor tried to write any book before. I have been learning everything from this forum, help files, various videos, not to mention a lot of trial and error; it is possible I'm not doing things in the most efficient manner, or have overlooked something quite basic. N.B. I have to use a set template for the printers and that includes CYMK/8 and a Colour Profile: CGATS21_CRPC1.icc (I have no prior experience of anything related to printing and Colour Spaces, but have used these for a few months with no trouble). Problem: I am having trouble with 'Books' in Publisher v2.2.0; the problem has only started since updating. I can create and edit individual files, but when I place them into an actual 'Book' Publisher often gets stuck 'Loading 1 document' when trying to open the AFBOOK file. (I left my PC on for 2 days one time to see if it would get past the 'Loading 1 document'; the file was 3 Master Pages of 6 layers of Frame Texts and a couple of rectangles, and 3 blank normal pages). The problem is intermittent, though it happens more often than not. This has been occurring with: An old Book containing old files. An old Book containing new files. An old Book containing a mixture of new and old files. A new Book containing old files. A new Book containing new files. A new Book containing a mixture of new and old files. Essentially, every combination I could think of. I have only been working on one project, the multiple Books have all been the same content just with newly created files and the content added with 'Copy and Paste' The latest Book was made 1 chapter at a time, with each chapter being thoroughly checked for every suggestion I could find on this forum (Document Dimensions, Colour Space/Profile, Fonts, etc). After each chapter I saved the Book, added the next chapter, thoroughly checked, and then saved the Book before moving on. At the time everything worked: I could open and close each chapter, make changes, synchronise, and get on using Publisher as intended. However, the next day it goes back to intermittently not working. The individual files all work fine, it is placing them into a Book that causes the problem. One thing I have noticed is that in the Windows folder with my files (I have tried new folders just in case), there are a number of 'AFPUB~LOCK~File' that are not disappearing when the file itself is closed; not all files and not always the same files, I can see no pattern that would suggest a link to this problem. (I can delete these manually...though don't know if I should!) I've attached the new AFBOOK file (DWG BOOK.AFBOOK) and all the current individual AFPUB files; these are all new created one at a time in the previously mentioned process. One of these files contains images, but the problem was occurring before I added them. I've also attached the latest .dmp file I have, but not sure if this relates: once Publisher is stuck on 'Loading 1 document' I have to use 'Task Manager' to close it, and this .dmp file seems to be too old for this problem. So, at the beginning of this post the AFBOOK file was not working, now at the end it is! Though, as I say, it is intermittent so will likely stop working again later, tomorrow, the day after... Thank you for any help anyone can give. walt.farrell Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums, Tremaine. Sorry to hear you're having this problem, and that it's intermittent (as those can be hard to figure out), Where do you store these files on your system? Are they all on a local disk, or in the Cloud somewhere, or ? Tremaine Posted October 14, 2023 Author Posted October 14, 2023 Hello and thank you, I store everything on my local E: Drive; Windows 10, and I presume the Affinity software, is on my C: Drive, while all my documents are stored on a solid state E: Drive. (Thought I managed to pre-empt all the info that may be needed, oh well.) I forgot to mention, in case it's important, that I have the Affinity Suite of Designer, Photo, and Publisher; though since upgrading I haven't used Designer or Photo. Thank you, Tremaine walt.farrell 1 Quote
walt.farrell Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 Thanks for the files, Tremaine. Unfortunately, everything opens fine for me, though that may not be surprising given that you've found the problem to be intermittent. Tremaine Posted October 14, 2023 Author Posted October 14, 2023 Walt, Nevertheless, thank you for looking. If anything else happens, or I figure it out, I'll post it here in case anyone else has a similar problem. Regards, Tremaine walt.farrell 1 Quote
Staff NathanC Posted October 17, 2023 Staff Posted October 17, 2023 Welcome to the forums @Tremaine, I've also not yet had any issue with opening your .afbook document or the subsequent chapter files as they all load immediately each time as expected. In previous instances of documents getting stuck on a continuous load loop for some users this has been caused by embedded/linked resources, though I can see for the majority of your document does not contain any except for the 'DWG Chaos and Law' chapter which contains two embedded resources. This may be something to check going forward if it's getting stuck on chapters that you know contain resources, particularly if the issue is only intermittent. If this is the case, see if changing your placed resources over to being linked resources has any impact. The ~lock files being generated was added in 2.2.0 and may be lingering due to the 5 minute timeout, you can read more about what these are from the FAQ post below. 🙂 Quote
Tremaine Posted October 25, 2023 Author Posted October 25, 2023 Thank you to everyone that has looked into this for me. I am still getting this error though it does seem to be less frequent than it was. I have tried installing Affinity Publisher on a different PC and opening the AFBOOK file and am still getting the same issue. If I ever work it out I'll post the solution here for anyone else having the problem. Thank you. Quote
