Evgenii Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 I am trying to understand whether it is possible to adjust the location of the sidenote so that the note frame starts higher than the reference point. In my example notes 27 and 28 start close to each other, and 28 gets split to the next page. This could be easily avoided, if I could adjust note 27 vertically a bit higher. But I did not figure out how to do that. Simply disallowing split notes doesn't help, as it changes the text flow in the main body. Quote
MikeTO Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Sorry, no, there's no way to adjust the vertical positioning, it's entirely automatic. There has been a suggestion that we should be allowed to have all sidenotes stacked from the top or bottom of the frame and while that would solve this one scenario it probably wouldn't be ideal for your entire document. As you said, turning off split notes would force the paragraph to the next page due to the position of the marker. My suggestion to Serif would be to enhance the Split Notes feature. Before choosing to split a sidenote, I think it should consider whether splitting could be avoided by adjusting the vertical position of the note or the preceding one. While testing this, I found a bug with Split Notes where it overflowed the note rather than splitting it so I'll report that bug and suggest the enhancement at the same time. Evgenii Posted October 8, 2023 Author Posted October 8, 2023 So I suppose the best workaround for now would be to make the sidenote 27 manually with a pin, and then restart the automated ones from 28 onwards. Quote

I wonder if it shouldn't be possible to use an 'invisible' real #27 placed above in the paragraph and mimic it with a cross-reference — this one being visible and put on the right place in the text? Proof of concept: sidenote, with fake number.afpub In this example, I reduced the body size for the real reference at 1 pt and choose transparent in the Characters panel (It's certainly possible to hide it better…) To re-use it or modify it (e.g. when editing the text), it's easier to define a character style 'Invisible note'. (In the screenshot, I overrode the invisible style by a larger red format…) Quote Affinity Suite 2.5 – Monterey 12.7.5 – MacBookPro 14" 2021 M1 Pro 16Go/1To I apologise for any approximations in my English. Following your example, indeed it works well in both directions. Thus this is really easier than the workaround with a cross-reference I suggested. But still, the lines of the split note are raising on each page separately, the note doesn't get fitted into the new available space. (there also some weird stuff going on with highlighting, but that's secondary). Disallowing splitting still sends the whole note onto the next page. Quote
