Alt-click on a new brush keeps your current brush width is not working

Recommended Posts

Windows 10 22H2
Hardware Acceleration on
Affinity Photo 2.2.0

Both Photo and Designer(Pixel Persona) since 2.1.
But, the feature is working on Vector Brushes in Designer(Designer Persona)
I customized the shortcut keys Shift + Number keys to other functions. When updated to 2.2, new additional keyboard shortcut keys such as shift + [ or ] did not assign. It's empty. But, Shift + Number keys were overwritten.

Steps to reproduce the bug. I'm not sure.
1. Install Affinity Photo 2.0.0.
2. Customize the keyboard shortcut keys Shift + Number keys to other functions.
3. Update to Affinity Photo 2.1.0.
4. Alt-click on a new brush keeps your current brush width is not working.

Hi @charactersword,

Thanks for your report!

I believe there are a few bugs you've identified in this post, so I have split my findings below:

  • Alt + Click on a new brush to keep your current brush width

I can confirm that I've replicated this issue here on both macOS and Windows and is not related to any custom keyboard shortcuts, either set in 2.0.4, 2.1.1 or 2.2.0.
It simply appears this functionality has been broken in 2.2.0 and therefore I have logged this with our development team to be resolved ASAP.

  • Assigning Shift + number key in 2.1.1 does not assign new shortcuts when updating

Equally, I have been able to replicate this behaviour here, when setting Shift + number key to a shortcut in 2.1.1, then updating to 2.2.0, the shortcuts for Brush Hardness etc are not set. You can resolve this by selecting 'Reset', however this will of course lose any custom keyboard shortcuts you have set.
I have logged this as a bug with our development team.

  • Updating to 2.2.0 with Shift + number key shortcut set overwrites shortcut set

I'm not 100% of the exact meaning behind 'overwrites' in your post, however I have found the following behaviour:

  1. In 2.1.1, set any keyboard shortcut to use Shift + number key
  2. Update to 2.2.0
  3. Under Settings > Shortcuts the Shift + number key shortcut is still listed
  4. With any tool that is not a brush tool selected, use the assigned Shift + number key shortcut
⚠ The shortcut fails to function
  5. With a brush tool selected, use any Shift + number key shortcut
✔ The shortcut changes the brush flow as expected, but does not trigger the associated function set under Settings > Shortcuts.

As I understand it, the Shift + number key shortcuts are now reserved for use by the Affinity app and therefore can no longer be used for custom shortcuts for other functionality. However, the user is not informed of this change in-app and the shortcuts appear to still be valid under Settings > Shortcuts.

Therefore, I have logged the following with our devs for this issue:

  • When updating, if we implement new reservation shortcuts that may have been previously assigned by the user, we should scan the users shortcuts and inform them if any will be lost due to the new changes.
  • Any reservation shortcuts, such as Shift +1, should not be allowed under Settings > Shortcuts and should inform the user of the conflict.

I hope this helps!

The issue "Alt + Click / Alt + Shift + Click on a new brush to retain size no longer functions for Pixel tools" (REF: AF-643) has been fixed by the developers in internal build "2.3.0.2094".
This fix is now available as a customer beta and is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Serif Info Bot to notify us.
