but no amount of waiting

Where are the files located (iCloud, perhaps?) and how long did you wait? If it's the Sonoma and iCloud resynch processing it could take hours, possibly overnight.

The files are resident on my MacBook

And not in a folder that is controlled by iCloud or other cloud service?

That is correct.  Not stored in the iCloud.  Not in DropBox. Not in any other cloud service.  In a folder, in the hard drive under documents.

Sorry for insisting but are you sure the Desktop & Documents folders on your internal drive are not synced with iCloud (via System settings > iCloud)?

That was the problem.  Thank you.  I hadn't realized that my tech guy turned on iCloud.  I turned it off and file opened as expected.

I'm having a similar problem opening previously created files. This is a new problem for me that started 2 days ago. My documents are stored on iCloud and synced to my HD. But I tried copying the afpub document to a non-synced portion of my HD, and also to a USB drive, but was unable to open. Yesterday the document stored in iCloud, synced to HD, did eventually open - I don't know how long it took, but at least an hour. I was able to successfully work on it the rest of the day, but today can't open it.

Examining my files I notice two files for each document: fn.afpub and a hidden fn.afpub~lock~, where fn is filename. The latter is identified as an Affinity Lock File. These lock files exist whether the .afpub file is in iCloud, in a non-synced portion of my HD, or on the USB drive. I've checked my older .afpub files (older than this week); no afpub~lock~ files exist for them. What are these lock files, and why are they here? I assume they have something to do with the problem that we on this thread are having in opening files.

I'm glad I found this thread. Thanks for the help given so far on it.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

The lock files prevent projects that are already open in one Affinity app from being opened simultaneously in another Affinity app or from being edited by several people at the same time.

In the event of program crashes, the file currently being edited may not be logged out properly, which can have fatal consequences when using cloud services. It is therefore strongly recommended that you first save to an internal storage medium and only then back up to the cloud.

Please describe your problem in more detail. Exactly what happens when you try to Open them? How are you trying to Open them?

Hi @PakBell,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums & sorry to hear you're having trouble!

Under Apple > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders > expand each Affinity app and please disable 'iCloud Drive' for each app.

Now restart your mac and try loading your files once again for me - do these now open in a more expected timeframe please? :)

I'm sorry to hear this @JSS & thanks for your file provided!

I can confirm that I'm having no trouble loading this document on macOS or Windows, indicating it may be an issue specific to your local machine.

Firstly, please ensure the Affinity app is fully closed/quit then restart your mac.

Once done, please download a recreated version of your file (linked below) and try opening this, instead of the current version that you have.

Does this load as expected please? :)

YES!  Thank you so much!  The file you sent back opened in both a local HD only and in an iCloud synced folder.  My original file still does not open.

What is going on here?  iCloud is an integral part of my workflows.  I can't just turn off sync on my Desktop and Downloads.  (I tried un-sync as recommended in this thread, and that didn't work.)  This happened on a different file once before - but it was not important so I assumed it got corrupted somehow and tossed it in the trash.  What do I do if this happens again to an important file?

My local machine is a new MacBook Air (M2, 2023) running Sonoma 14.3.1.  I just saw 14.4 is available, but I have not installed it yet.

Again - thank you.  I LOVE this software!

Thanks for letting me know - I'm certainly glad to hear this is working with my recovered file and we appreciate your kind feedback!

The suggested fix for this issue should not require you disabling Sync for your Desktop / Download folders - specifically the option within macOS is for the Affinity apps only and does not affect iClouds ability to sync these files with the cloud. Perhaps you have disabled the incorrect option within macOS settings in your testing?

Of course we certainly hope this should not occur again and our team are investigating potential causes of this issue, to reduce the frequency of such file errors in the future - though as with any computer application and file, we unfortunately cannot make any guarantees that a file will never become corrupted.

We can however reassure you that the Affinity Support team will always be happy and willing to assist, and often are able to recover these files, as you've found above.

I hope this clears things up :)
