Is there any way in which to get a scanned photo into Affinity Photo?

As VueScan can scan to PDF, JPG, TIFF you can all of these open (File -> Open, or File -> Place) in APh. Other than that try copy/paste from/to via the clipboard.

Even if it does:

  1. The Acquire Image implementation in Affinity is very buggy and doesn't even work for some users at all, myself included. As for why that is, it apparently still remains a mystery.
  2. That's just the Image Capture module while VueScan offers quite a few advanced options.

I do not see in AP 2.2 this option.

This feature is not available in Windows.

I believe it is on Macs only because it is a feature build into the macOS so they do not have to add any code to AP other than to use the API that already exists.

That's right, though from out of APh that doesn't always work on newer macOS versions.

For Windows, some tools like IrfanView do offer to scan/aquire images (also batch scan) from some on the system available TWAIN driver source.

As I (probably imperfectly) understand it, it isn't so much about what AP supports as what the software drivers provided by the makers of the scanners support, since they have a habit of not updating that for newer macOS versions to support old (& sometimes not so old) scanner models. That's why Vuescan is still popular after all these years.

For instance, the only scanner I have is the one built into my ancient "all in one" Canon MP620 printer, first released in 2008. Canon only offers drivers for it for OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) or earlier so apps like AP or Apple's Image Capture can't use it on any newer macOS version without 3rd party help like with Vuescan.

Vuescan supports this model but since I rarely do any scanning & on the rare instances I do I can use 'sneaker-net' to scan to a USB stick (or one of the ancient memory cards I have left over from an old camera), I do that to avoid having to buy Vuescan. If I did more scanning I might buy it but I would be more likely to buy a scanner with better macOS support.

Probably.

I use mostly a Canon MX870 for scanning tasks, where the Canon driver support is pretty similar for as for yours. Though I scan mostly over my local network and also often wireless, since this printer's scan component has also a multi-page double side supporting document scan feeder. However, the macOS aquire image feature works too here for me out of Affinity V1 apps and El Capitan.

You probably already know this but from what I can tell Canon does not offer driver support for the MX870 for any macOS version newer than OSX 10.11 El Capitan. So if you upgraded the OS or bought a new Mac you would either have to buy Vuescan or a new scanner.

I know, but I don't need that (Vuescan), as I also have a Win 10 (64-Bit) machine running on the local network with all printer/scanner relevant Canon drivers & network drivers. So that PC can always serve as a scan & print server too here.

I'd like to see VueScan integrated with Affinity Photo as well. It saves on file clutter to go directly into the app.

However, I think VueScan integrates with Photoshop using a proprietary plugin method (as opposed to TWAIN or WIA) so they would likely have to support Affinity Photo directly. Perhaps Affinity could get in contact with VueScan and pay them to add support. It would definitely open up a wide range of scanners.

Works for me with no problem on Windows. Note that this is from the VueScan menu system, not Photo.
