Mask removal doesn't work

Hi,

When I apply a mask to a layer that works fine, I can paint black on it to remove the image. But when I try to remove the mask by clicking "X" or even selecting a white colour, the brush continues to apply mask and to remove the image. have tried restarting. What's going on, and how do I fix it?
