Compatibility with NEF files from the Nikon Z8

Recommended Posts

That will only come when LibRAW supports it. But if you're on macOS it might come sooner if Apple supports it and you choose to use their RAW engine rather than Serif 's.

Support for NEF files from the Nikon Z8 camera has not been introduced in the latest 2.2.0 update either. I wish they could fix it and add it in the next version. Thanks for your attention.

That (as already said x-times before here in the forum) depends for the APh based RAW-engine on the LibRAW library (a third-party used library) and thus on LibRAW's support for the Nikon Z8. - Pretty much the same as for the alternative usable Apple macOS RAW engine under macOS, here macOS Ventura also doesn't support the Nikon Z8 yet.

The NEF (Lossless compression) files from my Z8 will open properly in Affinity 2.2 on my Windows 10 PC, whereas the NEF (High efficiency*) and NEF (High efficiency) files just produce a black square at the moment. Are the larger NEF image files (~50-57Mb) a problem? I have not compared the quality of the 3 NEF formats, but I suspect that most enthusiasts and professionals would want the Lossless compression option.

Would Affinity subscribing to the Extended Support offerred by LibRAW make any difference? Perhaps they could put in a request for the NEF (HE*) and NEF (HE) file formats to be supported.

I'm not 100% certain in regards to your specific camera, however I do believe this is something our team are considering and discussing further with LibRAW :)

I have just bought a Nikon Zf and I'm not sure what other camera the sensor best matches the Z611?

Neff Files wont open in affinity V1 and just show a black screen and I am looking to upgrade to V2.

Does anyone know if Affinity 2 can open this file type now or not before I upgrade?

Many thanks

Seems to be all good with Zf RAW Files...

Careful.   I have a Z8. It can record a nef file in one of multiple formats:

- traditional nef

- new high efficiency nef.

Nikon's HE* (High Efficiency nef) reduces the storage consumption by about 30%. It has been offered by Nikon since 2021.

Affinity Photo 2 does not support it.

AP2 has a number of problems. This is one that impacts my workflow. There are others. I've reported to serif & their response is that they will fix it sometime. They acknowledge some of my other problems, but have not diagnosed them. That let's me know that problem remediation is not a priority for them. While they are pursuing obscure enhancements to AP2 I am thinking that my next upgrade will be to something that simplifies my workflow.

You can find the full list of supported cameras in Affinity Photo V2 here -

If you haven't already, you can try a free 30 day trial of the Affinity V2 apps here, to see if they suit your workflow / are compatible with your camera -

https://store.serif.com/get/universal-licence-2/trial/

I hope this helps!

Hello Hangman. Sorry to have a delayed response, but the inability of Affinity Photo's current release to support Nikon's current High Efficiency RAW format is not a mystery.  It is a result of AF using a 3rd party package that is unable to support the format.

The format was introduced in 2022. Adobe has supported it since 2022.

And I am now using Adobe. In the long run, the costs seem to be about the same and Adobe has some top shelf features in addition to supporting a 2 year old format from a major camera vendor.

Hi @GreenSWOhio,

My understanding is that support for Nikon's High Efficiency RAW format will be included in the v2.6.0 Beta though there is no confirmed release date for that at the moment...
