Export embedded PDFs as graphics?

Recommended Posts

I have a music book that started out as indesign and all the music examples were embedded as PDFs. I want to publish the book on kindle but kindle doesn't support the custom fonts and I was wondering if there was an option to have affinity export the embedded images as a fully rendered graphic instead of re-embedding the PDF info?

This image shows the PDF on the left and what word or kindle sees on the right.

There are also online tools for converting PDFs to images, so if you still have the PDFs (or extract those first), then see for example ...

☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan
☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2

I have over 100 embedded PDF files. I don't want to individually convert them. If I do that, I might as well write the document over again from scratch. Disappointed that affinity can't export epub, docx and doesn't have the option to render embedded PDF files. I'll probably just use indesign for the project. I don't see the point of buying affinity publisher.

AFAIK APub doesn't offer that PDF to image conversion internally, as I've also not seen that being meantioned some other threads.

Though APub should be able to export selected pages as images ...

... but for over 100 embedded images that's probably not the desired way. Instead some sort of automation would be needed here to do the boring tasks then.

To export the placed PDF content as images only you can export with the option "Rasterize: Everything".

If you experienced already that "word or kindle" don't handle these fonts correctly what do you expect from an export as epub or docx?

The option exists: If you have the fonts installed that were used in the embedded PDF files you can first switch every embedded PDF layer in APub from its default "Passthrough" state to "Interpret" and then export the entire document with the option "Embed fonts: Text as Curves". This will maintain vector without the need for fonts within the finally resulting PDF.

I don't see the point of buying a kindle or word. 😉
