Mothman
I frequently use Curves to selectively brighten my images during post processing - my workflow is ctrl M - set lighten or darken - ctrl I to invert - select paint brush and color. I may be missing something but nothing happens when I try to lighten area's of my image. Marek

NotMyFault
There are variois things which could break the workflow: a selection I still active. Single pixel selections may be unnoticeable. Try to use CTRL-D before adding / inverting layers how do you set the blend mode, by mouse or (new in 2.1 beta) keyboard shortcuts? A common issue is that keyboard shortcut depend on where the input focus lies, and some keys may change the function depending on position. Old bug: Some numeric input requires Enter key before getting applied. brushes are notorious for causing trouble. E.g. brush settings / brush not as expected. Try to paint on a new pixel layer to check if brush works as expected.
