Panel scrolling lists unnecessarily retain focus

I wish panels would return focus to the document window after I interact with their scrolling lists. For example:

  1. Create a text frame. The document has focus.
  2. Single click Heading 1 in the Text Styles panel. The document has focus so you can type.
  3. Double click Heading 1 to edit it and click OK. The panel has focus, it's not returned to the document, so you can't type. There's no reason for the panel to keep focus because you can't do anything with it, and the only visual cue is that the text cursor isn't blinking. If text was selected the only visual cue would be that the selected text is grey instead of blueish grey.
  4. With the Text Styles panel still having focus, click Italic in the Context Bar. I can modify the formatting of text at the cursor but I still can't type which is confusing.

It's not just Text Styles, it's the same with Anchors, Hyperlinks, Assets, the new Cross References, Books, Glyph Browser, and any other panel with a scrolling list. In most cases the panel will keep focus with a single or double click but some like Text Styles keep focus only for a single click. Layers is the exception, it works fine.

Somebody made this work properly for single clicking with Text Styles so it seems that it should be fixable for the other cases, too.

This may be macOS only. Thank you.

One of the instructions for the upcoming cross-references feature illustrates this issue. The About Cross-References page in Help instructs the user to press the Backspace key but this will just result in a system beep because the panel has focus.

  1. Select the unwanted cross-references. (-click to select more than one.)
  2. Select Remove Cross-References.
  3. Select Yes to convert the cross-reference's field to regular text.
  4. (Optional) To remove the resulting text from your document, do one of the following:
    • If you selected one cross-reference, or if you selected multiple cross-references and their fields were in the same text object (including a sequence of linked text frames), the resulting text is automatically selected. Press the Backspace key to remove it.

Hi @MikeTO,

This is an issue when the Cross-References Panel is docked, undocked and it works as advertised... still an issue though as like you, I tend to keep my panels docked.

Yes, the focus issue is only with docked panels.
