How to print booklet with landscape pages

I have 36 pages a5 in landscape orientation in Publisher.

I want to print booklet in way to get A4 portrait where pages a5 in top and bottom.

When printing, choose A4 and layout, 2 pages, and portrait as print. That will do the job.

It is does not work. In preview it shows 2 pages side by side, not one under ones.

Yes and no. I will turn the first page manually, ok. But I can't get the 2 pages to fold under each other. I only get 2 pages side by side.

I find it much quicker when producing booklets to export as pdf and use the print as booklet option in the pdf reader.

In that case it seems you have your document setup as single pages (not facing / spreads). Then you can use the "N-Up" print option.
