Child Layer drag and dropping.

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I have (today) downloaded the trial copy for windows 10 of Designer v2.1.1 . I have watched lots of you tube vids before downloading the trial. I note on all the youtube tutorials, that to drag the upper layer to be nested, as a child, downwards and a blue line will appear and can be indented to enable the nesting (is that the correct terminology?) whenever i grab the upper icon downwards, the blue line never appears, the whole layer turns blue, but does not indent???

If I am not careful, I move the layer down the stack, rather than nest it.

Is it a bug? or as a total novice am I not doing something first or correctly??

I have attached a short video to show my problem, hope someone can shed some light please.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

Possibly you were looking at tutorials created in an earlier release of the application. You should find that dropping while the target later is fully blue should do what you're trying to do.

But to make sure, you also need to be careful where you drop the layer. Drop it over the name/label of the target, not over the thumbnail.

Both nesting options work as expected in your video: while dragging on the thumbnail turns the child into a mask for the parent, dragging on the layers name uses the parent as mask for its child. The blue indicators have been changed with V2 to be more obvious.

If you watch tutorials nowadays you should take notice what version is demonstrated, easily to detect by different Tool icons and different Layers panel icons.
