After update, program automatically restarts on obsolete version

Hello! I tried to search for this but did not get any matches so hopefully I am not duplicating a report.

I have noticed when I update any given Affinity program via the update dialogue box when you open the program while an update is pending - it will download and install the update and then automatically restart the program for me. When it does so, it restarts the outdated versioned program and then offers, again, to install the update. At this point one must decline the update, close the program, and open it again to begin using the updated version. This is not a hugely annoying thing but it bears mentioning in case there is an easy fix whether that be client-side or developer-side.

I am using an up-to-date Windows 10 Home 64-bit OS and have noticed this phenomenon over multiple updates with Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher for sure. Probably with Photo too and just forgot about it.

Thank you!

Welcome to the forums :)

Sorry to hear you are having issues updating do you know if you are using the MSI or MSIX version of our apps?

Thanks

For me, with the MSIX version, the sequence will occasionally be like this:

  1. I start the app, and get the notification of an update being available.
  2. I click the Install button, and the app downloads the update, and tells Windows to install it.
  3. At some point, Windows signals the app to Restart, but this happens before the new update has fully installed.
  4. The app restarts, and notifies me again that an update is available.
  5. If I wait a bit, Windows restarts the app again, and after that restart I get the updated app.

Truthfully I've never heard those acronyms before, but my download page for the Affinity programs says MSIX underneath the download button. 😅

The description walt just posted is akin to what I experience, although I have perhaps never waited a bit for that second restart. I just hit cancel and manually restart that second time.

There's another button for the EXE.

What one did you download? You should have it in your Downloads folder unless you've deleted it from there.

Or, when you were notified the update was available, did the notification have an Install button, or a Download button?

If it was Install, that's the MSIX version.

I see! I have .msix files in my downloads folder for the 2.0 programs.

Thanks. Then you're probably seeing the sequence I described during the update.

When you click Install, just wait until the install finishes, the program restarts, and you do not get an Update prompt. You can also look in the Windows Start menu, where you will see a progress bar on the program which will go away once the update is finished.
