Kate England
Is there a way to create outlines of vector art so that I can export artwork from Affinity to Illustrator where I'd like to go on working with it in vector format? The reason I ask is that I need to be able to create vector patterns.
Staff MEB Posted March 17, 2016 Staff Share Posted March 17, 2016 Hi Kate England, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) I'm not sure i understood you correctly but i believe you want to expand the vector objects (strokes). If that's the case select them and go to menu Layer ▸ Expand Stroke, so they become shapes/curves. TinPianoMan
And if you're working with text, you can use Layer > Convert to Curves or right-click Convert to Curves
Kate England
Thanks so much for your responses @MEB and @TinPianoMan! :) Yes, exactly, I'd like to expand the vector objects. Layer > Expand Stroke works with the basic brushes, but I can't seem to get it to work with the incredible Daub brushes?
Staff MEB Posted March 18, 2016 Staff Share Posted March 18, 2016 Hi Kate, Most DAUB brushes are raster based (based on an image) that's why they can't be converted to vectors. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
PixelPest
As far as I can tell are these brushes in a proprietary file format (.sut) for Manga&ClipStudio. Affinity Designer accepts .abr (Adobe Photoshop Brush)-files. Cheers P.
Staff MEB Posted March 18, 2016 Staff Share Posted March 18, 2016 Hi PixelPest, Paolo also created some DAUB brushes specifically for Affinity. You can find them in the Brushes panel, in the dropdown on the top (scroll down a little). He also provided additional brushes you can install yourself in the app. I've compiled them here (brushes section). PixelPest
Ah Okay - as a ClipStudio user I just know about these: http://www.daub-brushes.com/brush_set_one/ That´s interesting - thanks for letting me know. :) Cheers P.
Kate England
That's a handy list, PixelPest! Thanks! :) I'm using DAUB Vector Set Vol 1-2, I thought they were created for Affinity Designer?
PixelPest
Yeah - I was on a wrong trip - see above. MEB got me straight. :D They work for me. Not for you? Cheers P.
Kate England
No, I'm not able to Expand the Stroke of the two Daub sets.
Staff MEB Posted March 18, 2016 Staff Share Posted March 18, 2016 Hi Kate, Those brushes use raster images/textures (despite their name) which cannot be expanded as vector objects. Double click a brush in the Brushes panel to open the Brush editing dialog where you can see the bitmap used (on the bottom) as the base for the brush. R C-R
No way (yet) to vectorize bitmaps in AD. paolo.limoncelli
No, I'm not able to Expand the Stroke of the two Daub sets. Yep... Vector brushes in Affinity are divided into: - Solid Brushes - Textured Intensity Brushes - Textured Image Brushes Only the solid ones are pure vectors, and can be expanded. Textured ones are basically raster strokes mapped along a path. You got a great flexibility and can change anything in any moment: Size/Opacity and distribution alonge stroke Stroke nodes Colour And can even use a gradient along your stroke (even if it doesn't follow its direction yet). To have a realistic media representation bitmaps are essential even in vector strokes. Anyway for "synthetic" effects and solid strokes (or repeating patterns) vectors are very welcome, and I think that sooner or later we will see there features in AD too. The link for the DAUB Vector Set Vol 1 (Affinity Review iBook Issue #1, page 73) no longer works. I presume the iBook is no longer available. But now the link to get the Vector Set Vol 1 is gone. Could that link be put somewhere? Thanks...

Yes, strange, on this page... http://www.miguelboto.com/affinity/resources/ The Volume 1 Vector brushes link takes you to this page now: https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/designer/workbook/ Maybe a little hijacking going on?? :P Quote ♥ WIN 10 AD & AP ♥ Lenovo Legion Y520 15.6" Laptop
Staff MEB Posted October 27, 2016 Staff Share Posted October 27, 2016 Hi Sarvasri, jer, Thanks for pointing this out. The Affinity Review page on Serif's Website was taken down and redirected to the new Workbook page. I've updated the link on my site so it now points to the file. It should work now.
