Affinity Designer bug - line node deleted if repositioned to intersect geometry

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Not a very clear title but best I could do to explain the odd bug. Here's a video showcasing it.

Effectively, what I want to do is to recreate the group above which is a triangle divided into four angle bisectors (the red lines). This is something I do a lot in Designer. I start with any triangle shape, and the steps I follow are:

  1. Draw a line along the shortest length of the triangle.
  2. Use the point transform tool to rotate the line around the bottom right corner (the point that I am bisecting) until it snaps to the hypotenuse.
  3. Reposition the node which is at the bottom right corner so that it intersects the bottom left corner.
  4. Rotate the line 90 degrees to give the angle bisector.

Where I am encountering the bug is at point 3. When I reposition the node to the bottom left corner intersection, the rubber band preview of the line mysteriously disappears and you can see the context toolbar options change. This isn't the case if I move the node to any other position on the canvas. When I commit the change, the node I was repositioning looks to have disappeared and somehow created a one node curve which can't even be seen in outline mode. The only way to get around this is to reposition the node to another place first, then move the node to the intersection point I want.

From the video and my experience, this is repeatable all the time so it's not a bug that comes and goes. I don't know exactly what is triggering it - perhaps a combination of having used the point transform tool & changing the rotation centre & repositioning a node to intersect geometry.

Would be great if this could be investigated

Hi @Maxdanger,

Just to confirm that I see the same issue so this definitely looks like a bug, certainly on macOS at least...

I'm struggling to reproduce this.

I've gone over the video numerous times to match your contextual settings but it seems fine for me. Are you able to attach a document in the state right before I need to reposition the node? I thnk I'm just missing a step.

Hi Chris,

I managed to smash my laptop so I don’t have it to hand to send you the file I was using, but I can confirm the issue is also present on iPad (2.1 version though) so I’ve attached a file at the point where the bug occurs and recorded a screengrab of how I made the file.

Thanks very much

Max

Ah perfect - I've got it now. I can confirm this also affects Windows. I'll get this logged with the developers for you.

Much appreciated :)

Amazing thanks very much Chris!

I love how responsive you guys are to feedback/bug reports 🫶

The issue "Line preview disappears when repositioning node" (REF: AFD-6766) has been fixed by the developers in internal build "2.2.0.1951".
This fix should soon be available as a customer beta and is planned for inclusion in the next customer release.
Customer beta builds are announced here and you can participate by following these instructions.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Serif Info Bot to notify us.
