olwen Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 i just want to crop, make minor adjustments and convert copies to small jpeg for use on internet. just how hard is that???? dead easy on photoshop, does it actually exist on affinity?????
Hangman Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 Hi @olwen and welcome to the forums, Which Affinity app are you using, Photo or Designer... Assuming the former, then yes it is potentially very easy... could you elaborate a little in terms of what you are wanting to achieve... What is your source image? What have you tried so far that isn't working for you? Affinity Designer 2.6.3 | Affinity Photo 2.6.3 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.3 MacBook Pro M3 Max, 36 GB Unified Memory, macOS Sonoma 14.6.1, Magic Mouse HP ENVY x360, 8 GB RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, Windows 10 Home, Logitech Mouse
R C-R Posted July 29, 2023 Posted July 29, 2023 All 3 Affinity apps can 'convert' a document to JPEG & quite a few other formats via the Export function, & AD & AP also have a dedicated Export Persona with multiple options not available via File > Export in the other personas, like simultaneously exporting to several different formats, scales/sizes, etc. All 3 have many common layer based pixel adjustment capabilities but AP also has powerful live & destructive Filter capabilities. However, PS has more of them than Affinity does. AP has a document-based Crop Tool that AD lacks, although (perhaps oddly) it is available in APub via Studio Link in APub's Photo Persona if AP is also installed. All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.6 Mac apps (currently 2.6.4); 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7

And, if this opened .JPG did not have a colour profile embedded than Affinity will add one with "Save". – Means, "Save" in Affinity seems to work different than other apps which may result in unexpected file sizes for just "minor adjustments". • MacBookPro Retina 15" | macOS 10.14.6 | Eizo 27" | Affinity V1 • iPad 10.Gen. | iOS 18.6.2 | Affinity V2.6.3

True, in the APub 2 Photo Persona the Crop Tool is greyed out if the document just has one or more artboards but you can still do the equivalent of cropping each of them by selecting the artboard (not its content) with the Move Tool & dragging the handles to get that. As with the Crop Tool, to make the crop destructive you can use the rasterize option, at the expense of converting it to a pixel layer. What do you get in the Photo Persona for this APub V2 1 page only.afpub example? It has just a single page but for me the regular (non-vector) Crop Tool is available in that persona. Likewise for this 1 artboard.afpub example, there is just a regular (non-vector) Crop Tool option for me but it is greyed out. For neither file do I have a Vector Crop Tool in the Photo Persona's Tools panel. That is available only in the other 2 Personas. For "1 page only" I have the normal Photo Raster Crop Tool: I thought I had tested that, but perhaps I mistakenly had a Master Page, too. 12 minutes ago, R C-R said: Likewise for this 1 artboard.afpub example, there is just a regular (non-vector) Crop Tool option for me but it is greyed out. smadell Posted July 30, 2023 Posted July 30, 2023 Talk about "too much information"! I assume (since you are thinking about moving over from Photoshop) that your Affinity application of choice will be Affinity Photo. And, to answer your question in the simplest manner, what you want to do is exquisitely simple. You can start Affinity Photo with the "sublime" and progress all the way to "the ridiculous" (not really ridiculous, but AP is certainly capable of things such that no single person would need all of them). Since a picture's worth a thousand words, watch this… Simple Edit.mp4 Old Bruce 1 Affinity Photo 2, Affinity Publisher 2, Affinity Designer 2 (latest retail versions) - desktop & iPad Culling - FastRawViewer; Raw Developer - Capture One Pro; Asset Management - Photo Supreme Mac Studio with M2 Max (2023); 64 GB RAM; macOS 15 (Sequoia); Mac Studio Display - iPad Air 4th Gen; iPadOS 18
