Page numbers out of order

Recommended Posts

I have a double-sided A5 pamphlet-sort of thing and the pagenumbers need to be ordered from the master page in a strange way.

So master A (righthanded pages) ought to be be page 1 and 3, and master B (lefthanded pages) page 4 and 2.

How do I pull that off?

Master pages don't show specific page numbers but their <#> field placeholders only. (menu Text > Insert > Fields > Page Number)

They turn to concrete numbers if applied to document pages. There they get the number automatically according to the page position within the Pages Panel.

I know that the master page does not dictate the number, but when I apply the page numbers the order appears just ascending, 1,2,3,4 and so on, but I need another order. That's what I am asking for. Sorry if I was unclear.

The order seems to be 1, 3, 4, 2, 5, 7, 8, 6 and so on.

If you want to show specific numbers in your layout that are not the page numbers of the page order in your layout document you would rather type them as numbers, not via the auto-generated field.

In case you have a certain imposition in mind to arrange pages in a certain order for print of more than one page per sheet you might create a layout in 'normal' page order and print with an according setting (or export as single page PDF for external printing).

If I print it as a booklet I would need to print it as an A3 though, as each panel would be less than an A5 otherwise.

It depends on your print option setting for scaling. To me an A5 spread gets placed on A4 without scaling in the in Affinity print options. A printer that prints without margin/border might be able to print two A5 pages in 100% on one A4 sheet.

Also you might consider whether the layout contains elements close to the edge that could get cropped on a printer with margin. For instance if the layout is white near the edge (layout margin = printer margin, e.g. ~ 5 mm) then even the slightly cropping would not be visible on the printed result.
