Erratic performance in Photo 2.2.0.1903 when typing after a macro is applied

Recommended Posts

It may be something I am doing, but while testing whether the new Beta is working smoothly with macros, I have found a very erratic — and odd — reaction when using the Frame Text Tool after applying some of the JR Filter Gallery 2 macros to an image. In some cases the macro is applied and subsequent text is fine, in others it causes the text to hesitate as it is being entered. I think the video shows this best. I used only two examples within the macros

Edit:  Not having tried this before in v.2.1.1, I went back just now.  Same thing, but even worse.  It ended in a crash and complete shutdown of Photo.

category for brevity.

HI @jmwellborn,

I see very much the same issue when those macros are applied, actually worse on an Intel processor, though logically would you actually want to apply the macro to the whole page including the text or would you only really want to apply it to the image?

When the macros are nested in the image layer then there is no delay when typing text... :)

No, I wouldn’t logically want to apply the macro to the whole text.  Just reporting an anomaly.  Why doesn’t the strange issue apply to all macro categories?  Or why does it only apply to certain Macros in one category?  And why did it crash Photo 2.1.1?  Not only that, but if the text layer is above the image layer but beneath the macros layer (not shown in the video) some of the macros (i.e. Charcoal) apply the macro to the text but it still types correctly.

Have you considered what that particular macro added? Here's James's Rough Charcoal applied to a similar file, with all the Layers it adds expanded:

That one has 3 Live Filters that would be affecting the Placed image and the Text Frame.

If you don't want it affecting the Text Frame, you should nest it into the image layer, instead.
