Which App are you using?

You can right click on the top toolbar and choose customise toolbar, there you will find icons you can drag onto the toolbar, so, in Affinity Photo v2 you would see something like this...

When you say “it appears blank”, what is the “it” and what do you mean by “appears blank”?
Which part of your screenshot is showing us this?

To try and be clear, when you have multiple layers selected, to distribute them you need to press the Alignment button on the Toolbar and then choose the appropriate functionality from the pop-up (or you can do similar things from the “Layer → Alignment” menu but you don’t have as much control over what happens).

Thanks for making that clearer.

Yes, you can only distribute multiple layers – it would make no sense to distribute a single layer.

You might also be interested in the Alignment Handles – see attached image.
They can’t be used for distribution but they are useful for aligning layers in a different way.

You’re welcome.

If something can be seen in the Layers Panel and/or it can be manipulated via the Layer menu then I call it a layer, but the terms ‘layer’ and ‘object’ can often mean the same thing; even Serif uses both at different times.
