PaoloT Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 Hi, A publication meant for printing is usually made of facing pages. However, always working in a spread when editing text is very uncomfortable, since you have to continually jump from one side to the other. Being able to switch to viewing single pages arranged in vertical, even with a facing-pages document, would make work much more pleasant. It would also be a good way of previewing an eBook, when the feature is ready. Paolo PaulEC 1
Larry Rooney Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 I agree, Paolo, that thought crossed my mind a few times. LR PaoloT 1
PaoloT Posted January 25 Author Posted January 25 Since this features has never been added, I wonder if it has been at least taken in consideration. Again: my use of page layout programs is not mainly that of a designer, but of an author. Being able to edit and check the text while scrolling vertically would be incredibly more comfortable than jumping around in the spreads. I guess anybody working on books or any text-focused document would be more at ease with this view mode. And since eBook editing will sooner or later be implemented, this would make even more sense in the future. Paolo
Meliora spero Posted January 25 Posted January 25 For my part, I can confirm that a story editor is missing. When working on publications that ultimately become books of one kind or another, or in text-heavy publications in general, I cannot scroll around and zoom in and out to edit text or formatting, find formatting errors, or similar tasks. There is now built-in support for endnotes, footnotes, and cross-references, so the need for a tool that allows easy focus on text is critical. This is especially true, as others have pointed out, since Affinity's import limitations require a lot of manual work on the text after import. A text/story persona, as I read someone suggest, would be a better idea. A more focused environment for text layout that could also have its own panel settings, allowing for seamless persona switching without having to load studio presets. Well, I’ve accepted that I’ll have to stick with InDesign for serious and commercial work. But perhaps there are "discount" options for Affinity - for example, a modifier + PageDown shortcut that jumps between pages and focuses on the next page, which you're missing. Serif, did you foolishly fill the usability specialist role you advertised internally? If so, be transparent with your customers. Continuing without proper UX expertise both insults and affects your entire customer base.
