Flashing render tiles while zoom in or out in active selection or quick mask mode Photo V2

Recommended Posts

When using zoom in/out on active selection or quick mask mode there are annoying flashing render tiles.
It affects also pixel persona in Designer and photo persona in Publisher.

I would expect the zoom should be smooth without such artifacts on canvas.
It has a very negative impact on the user experience

Are developers aware of the issue and working on fixing this bug?

Hi Bbrother,

If you go to edit > Settings and then under performance disable Open CL does this issue still occur?

Thanks

@Callum It's been over a year since an identical issue was reported by @Salad and there is no concrete answer.

What is the status of this issue?

  • have developers checked this issue?
  • is the issue still under investigation?
  • is there any active work in progress to resolve the issue?
  • did you logged this issue as a bug? I don't see the tag on the post.

Hardware acceleration seems to be unrelated to this problem.

Hey,

I believe the issue is being caused by our marching ants running at 60fps. On macOS, they I believe they run at around 15fps which is likely why we do not see this on a Mac. This is putting additional strain on the system made worse by the full canvas redraw on a pan and zoom.

So the fix would be to reduce the speed of the marching ants on Windows to free up resources to more elegantly redraw the canvas.

This has been bumped and I'll add the tag to the thread.

@Chris B,

I just want to point out  bump it that this is still an issue in the recently released version 2.4.2.

Why hasn't this solution been implemented?
Months go by, new updates are released to fix more trivial bugs, and yet this one is still present.😠

Just wanted to let you know @Chris B that reducing the marching ants speed in 2.5.5 didn't fix the problem.

  • It helped a bit when there is an active selection on the canvas - it reduced the intensity and frequency of the flashing tiles but didn't remove them completely.
  • As for the quick mask mode. It still looks bad. Intense and frequent flashing of render tiles when zooming in/out. In short, working in this mode still sucks in terms of user experience.

I tested it on several mid-range to high-end machines. It's the same with and without hardware acceleration. Sorry, but the solution must lie somewhere else.
I'm adding a video of what it looks like ↓.

Hey bbrother,

I would never expect the marching ants speed to 'fix' this per se - just alleviate the issue somewhat.

Even with no selection, you will see the render tiles on zoom/pan as this is just the way the app is built. Over the years we've fixed issues where the black tiles can get 'stuck' on the screen but I do not think we will ever prevent them entirely.

I think it's worth chasing the issue with the mask as I would consider this to be totally distracting as we've not only got the tiles but also the entire workspace flashes with the red overlay. I can log a separate issue for this to see if it can be improved.
