Pulling my hair out . I'm in the UK and trying to put a white canvas border around my image. I cropped my image to 12 x 8 inches , made sure in resize image (document) went to canvas resize and put in 16 x 12 inches which should be a 2" border all round. Nice and easy you would think but doent matter what I do the borders are odd. I've trying locking and unlocking dimensions , canvas clip and unclip, rastering and trimming my crop. Trying millimetres and inches, opening, closing and reopening and still not getting any closer.

Please help!

Also why can I export a jpeg but not open one ?

Hi @BeckyT and welcome to the forums,

It sounds as though you are doing everything correctly though one thought...

When you initially cropped your image to 12 x 8 inches was that a destructive or non-destructive crop? Once cropped, if you right-click on the layer in the layers panel and then select 'Rasterise & Trim...' prior to resizing your canvas you may then find adding the border by resizing the canvas to 16 x 12 inches gives you what you need.

Let us know if that works for you... :)

Did you applied a centered border placement orientation?

An easy way to get a white border around an image is this one ...

- enhance the document canvas and fill it with white
- place an image layer centered oriented on the white canvas

NOTE that there are several different ways to add borders to images, the forum lists several threads and link reference about that theme ...
