Designer and Photo keep crashing when trying to move layers

Recommended Posts

What Application am I using?

Photo and Designer

What Version?

2.1.1

Can I reproduce it?

Yes

Does it happen for a new document?

Yes

So both programs seem to be crashing every time I try to move a layer in the layer view on the right hand side. I cant tell you how it started, it only started all of the sudden well into creating a project. The first time I notice was when I created a mask layer and tried to move it underneath an already existing layer.

I recorded a video using geforce of me trying to move a layer and the program just quitting.

perhaps it has something to do with geforce? Every time it crashed a little graphic popped up related to geforce

UPDATE:

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both programs, did not work.

I also tried older versions of the photo program (2.0.4 and 2.1), and the same problem persists.

Hi @D_Poppins welcome to the forums,

Many thanks for the level of detail along with your recording, I've got a few potential solutions and follow up queries below:

- Try disabling 'Hardware Acceleration' Under Edit > Settings > Performance, once the option has been unticked restart the app when prompted to and repeat the same test again.

- On your recording I didn't see a popup however it could be GPU/Driver related so I would recommend installing the latest drivers available and when prompted to, tick the 'Clean installation' box. If you already have the latest drivers installed, try re-installing them with the 'clean installation' box ticked, this should be fairly straightforward to do in GeForce Experience.

- If it's still failing after the above, to help rule out if it's GPU/driver related, within the app settings > performance swap the 'Renderer' option to 'Software' and then close and restart the app when prompted to and try again.

---

Queries:

- Does this occur on a new document in Photo, or does the crash only occur when moving layers in an existing document?

- Could you provide a few recent crash reports after encountering the crash? The forum thread below details how to find these.

Many thanks!

Well Nathan,

I cant tell you how or why, but when I launched affinity photo this evening, the layers worked fine. I wanted to see if the problem was still a problem before I tried some of your suggestions, and it is not anymore. It may have just been that I needed to restart windows (windows does love to create problems). Of course, if it comes up again or some similar problem joins the party, I will try the potential solutions you gave.

Thank you so much for responding! I have never really had much luck on other forums for other things, so to get a response first try is really cool.

Hi guys! I'm having the same issue with moving files causing Affinity to crash.

Not exactly sure how to fix it other than restarting Windows. After I do that, I can move the files freely like normally. After a while though, it does happen again. Of course, restarting Windows does fix the problem, but it's very inconvienent and annoying.

I tried the solutions above, 'Hardware Acceleration' was already disabled. And I believe I've tried to uninstall and reinstall Affinity in the past, and it didn't work.

I just thought I'd come on here and try to get another view on how to fix this.

@Bloomy,

That looks remarkably like a Capture One demo image...

It's not clear from the screen recordings exactly what is happening, are you, as per the OP trying to reorder the image in the Layers panel or are you doing something else when you see the crash?
