Importing images into AP from Apple Mac ' Photos '

Recommended Posts

I am new to AP and need some help please. I am using Apple Mac. ' Photos ' to store and catalogue my

images. The images go direct into Photos via a card reader and all my images are RAW files (Canon CR2)

When I open AP and then go to File - Open I am directed to 'Photos' to select an image. So far so good.

The images that are in Photos are RAW but when selected to go into AP they do not go to Develop Persona but instead go into Photo Persona as a JPEG. What am I doing wrong ?

Hi TBear,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

You're not doing anything wrong.

There's no way to send the images directly as RAW from Apple Photos. You have to manually export them going to menu File ▸ Export ▸ Export Unmodified Original within Apple Photos app.

Hi Geminitiger,

No, the Edit in... functionality is only available in Apple iPhoto and Aperture.

In Affinity Photo you can go to menu File ▸ Open, scroll down a little to the Media section and access Apple Photos's library directly from there, however the files will be imported to Affinity as JPG's not RAW's. Note for this to work you must have your Photo Library set as System Photo Library. You can set this in Apple Photos PreferencesGeneral tab, pressing the Use as System Photo Library button right below the the Library Location path.

You can then edit them as you wish, then go to menu File ▸ Save and select Save Flattened from the dialog that will appear. The image will be saved directly to Apple Photos.

I don't recommend using this process because if you only have JPG files in Photos Library, when you save the edited version from Affinity Photo it will rewrite the original in Apple Photos and apparently there's no way to get the original back (despite the thumbnail in Photos still display the original unedited version). If you have the corresponding RAW file then you can at least use it to recover the original if needed.

If you prefer to work with the RAW files instead you must export them from Apple Photos first manually going to menu File ▸ Export ▸ Export Unmodified Original.... Then open it in Affinity Photo, edit the image and save in your preferred format. To import it back to Apple Photos go to menu File ▸ Import... and select the file you exported from Affinity or drag it from the Finder to Apple Photos.

I believe Apple will introduce some improvements here with the next OS X release.
