Some of the tools are not selectable (Affinity Designer 2.1.1 - MacOS Ventura)

For the last couple of weeks, some of the tools in Affinity Designer (2.1.1) are not selectable. Therefore not usable. 

With the default tool bar, I can select and use all the tools until the knife tool, and the last one, the. measure tool. I can select and use these, and I get the tooltips when hovering. 

But not for all the other tools (see screenshot with red box), I can select them nor use them. 

I am not sure but I suspect this happened since the recent update, a few weeks ago. 

Here's what I've done:

- restarted the app and computer: no change
- tested with different files: the problem persists
- checked for a latest update: I have the latest
- checked for a latest MacOS update: I have the latest (13.1)
- checked that I am in the Designer Persona (I am not aware of a mode or function that would disable these) 
- checked that my layers or files are not locked (my work around is to duplicate shapes and text boxes instead of creating new ones)

 

I am running Affinity Designer 2.1.1 on 2021 Mac Book Pro M1 with MacOS Ventura 13.1

 

I would appreciate any help or tip, I am desperate and can't work with this. Cheers

Hi @TheWebStrategist and welcome to the forums,

One thing to try perhaps is a factory reset of Designer by holding the Ctrl Key down when launching the app. When the Clear User Data screen appears, leave the first three options selected and additionally select Rest Tool Presets in the second list. Once selected, click the Clear button and let Designer launch and then see whether or not that fixes the issue you are seeing.

It partially works. Let me explain: 

After doing the procedure, I open my existing file and try the square tool. I was able to select it and draw a square. But then I couldn't select any of the tools.

I repeated the procedure once more, I created a new document this time, and it worked. 

I open that same document from the first time and the tools won't work at all. In fact, they won't work in any document unless I reset again. 

But when I reset, and open other more recent documents, it works. As long as I don't open some of my documents. 

I suspect this come from some of my documents made with an older version (Affinity 1), or I have some imported images or presets that creates the bug. 

This is annoying as I have to redesign or transfer my older designs in new documents.

Are you able to upload one of the documents where you are seeing this issue so we can take a look at what might be causing the issue?

I reopened that file and everything seems to work now. So weird. I'll try to reproduce the bug and upload the file.
