Masking groups removes snapping candidates

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've found that when you mask a group (and when you apply a clipping mask) you are unable to snap to any objects within the masked group.

In the below screen record, I have a bunch of curves which are being detected as candidates with my snapping settings, and as soon as I apply a mask I am unable to snap to them. Then when I hide the mask, I am again able to snap.

I wondered if the reason would be the option to only snap to visible layers but that doesn't seem to help, so as far as I can tell, there is no way to snap to masked objects

I'm using AD version 2.1.1.1847 (also confirm this bug exists in the most recent 2.2 beta)

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Maxdanger,

I've replicated this issue and it has now been logged with the developers for further investigation. It looks like the problem occurs when there is no active selection of the group layer when a mask is clipped, the 'Snap to Object Geometry' rule is only snapping the pen tool to the masking curve rather than the nested curves inside the group, if you select the group layer in the layers panel and then use the pen tool, it should then snap to the curves.

Thanks @NathanC!

I'm afraid I don't quite understand this part of your reply:

I've tried selecting one of the masked objects in the layer stack, selecting all of the masked objects, and grouping the masked objects and selecting that, and none of that will enable snapping. The only solution I found was to temporarily disable the visibility of the masking object.

I don't suppose you could do a quick screen record to show what you mean could you?

Thanks very much for the response and for passing onto development - I love how much Affinity listens to user feedback to improve its stellar products!

Thanks Nathan. I see what you mean now :)

Just to report that this works for objects in the immediate group but there's still the issue that any groups within groups are excluded from the snapping

Thanks for passing onto development!
