Hi there,

I hope my list will help, as I certainly see a lot of potential in this application.

To not show off like a complainer, I have integrated a Pro list.

I had a few hours with the app, and here is what I would love to see. I know, the variety of needs is certainly different for anyone.

Thanks for keeping the price low and the tech nice. One of my day-jobs is since a decade to be a beta tester, so I hope I do not sound too harsh. Sorry if...
I use Photoshop since 1993, I like to switch ASAP, as Adobes rent-model is not my ideal at all.

Pros:

CMD-Z: Multiple, no time wasted being forced to go to history. (Without breaking fingers (Opt/CMD/Z in Ps)

The Warp tool, it feels like a tool of today!

The Gradient tool, it stays interactive and is screen based. A huge time safer.

Curve includes Alpha and more features.

DCI P3

Overall, compared to Photoshop, it feels up-to-date and fresh, responsive, and has no 8bit/channel limitations all over the place. Certainly promising and I can’t wait for any future update, when things get even more mature.

Cons:

No scratch disk can be designated to be used. Which limits the use heavily for large projects. (My files are normally between 2GB and 30GB large)

No work spaces, just set it up and live with it. No switch among several. Which is pretty odd.

Clone Tool, please allow via numerical input to fine-tune the distance, or perhaps via option/CMD to move the target a little bit. I would expect the Opacity settings to be in the Brush settings, in a modern tool like this.

The Brush menu has that MORE button, if the menu is open, the button should show LESS as option.

The Warp tool is great, except that it can't extend if there is transparency involved in the layer. Big disadvantage.

No 32 bit/channel — Just: OUCH! We live in an HDRI world since over a decade. Which excludes one flavor of psd files, so the claim to open psd is not really true!

New Document, allow for a list, with custom sizes and settings, the given list is fine, but I really feel it takes more time to find what I like than to set my own up.

Panoramatool, compared to some high end apps, not bad at all, but not to be able to render the single source images into separate layers, renders it useless for me.

The Adjustment Panel, way too large and after a few minutes I really don’t need the names anymore. Allow for Icons only, and a instead of a list, a grid.

As with the Adjustments, the Effect panel, way too much space.

Option/ CMD delete to fill layer with foreground background…? To do that, it needs too many steps in Affinity.

I might miss something here, but the Layer and Mask workflow is not working. How can I transform the Layer without the mask, or both or only the mask, without moving stuff around. This feels not solved. Again, I might miss something.

The Layer manager fills the little preview icons and disables so to see where the image is, e.g., in an manual stitched panorama, which is a huge disadvantage while working with dozens of images in a 360º image stitch. This doesn't allow to identify the XY location of an image. So: One has no idea where one image is and has to search. For very wide panoramas, this is useless.  All in all, even the Ps Layer looks old by now, it is more functional. I feel limited here.

The Blend Modes, while choosing — flashes like a X-Mas tree. Only starters and people who have no idea what each mode does need this preview. For someone used to set a target blend mode by knowledge, this is very ugly and disturbing.

Flood Fill doesn’t work on transparent areas, sometimes it does. What do I miss?

The “Transparent Background" can’t be set to default. A white BG is misleading and hard on the eyes.

Some art brushes leaves a jaggy outline around them.

The left toolbar, more often than not, the tool - even visible as icon is not presented after clicking on it, In 4 out five cases I need to go to the “fly-out menu” This is annoying.

The icons look like toys, too colorful and toonish for my taste. They can be set to monochrome, but that doesn’t help it.

No “.pbs”, which limits the use drastically for large images, and not even half-float Open EXR. For me — sadly the K.O. of this release.

The interaction among documents, e.g., duplicate (layers / folders), or Match Color , not a given.

No option to work on the EXIF data, not even to exclude them from export. Next KO.

some quick responses:

  • you can set cmd + del as a custom keyboard shortcut to fill with foreground/ background color
  • 32bit support is in development for 1.5
  • Export > More > Exclude EXIF/ Metadata is available
  • Move the mask - simply click on it, move both mask and layer - click on the layer, move just the layer - just click the "lock children" option in the top bar (move tool selected)

hope that helps

I agree on the layout of the adjustment layers and workspaces (which I think could be incorporated along with the macro persona because they also "automate" certain tasks)

Panorama feature was such a surprise to me, I had expected it way down the road so it´s a nice addition for me. Crop to opaque should be ported back to the crop tool as well though so some things to say here.

Thanks a lot, MBd, and even more thank you for your professional reply! Very much appreciated.

32bit/channel, yeah! Which is one of my main concerns.

I certainly know it is a v1.0 and for that it is allready great.

I really look forward to their next steps. :o)

***Please add scratch disk support.***  When I'm doing freelance at home it makes all the difference in the world for my productivity.  Although I currently have a powerful computer I do find that there's lag problems when switching between tools (specifically when using the node tool to move vertices points).

No scratch disk can be designated to be used.  — My biggest files have been 16 GB range and AP certainly uses scratch disks. How it does this is another question, and we have not means targeting a certain disk for scratch use, but generally I feel AP is handling this well.

Panoramatool, compared to some high end apps, not bad at all, but not to be able to render the single source images into separate layers — I would love to have panorama source images as layers in panorama.

The Blend Modes, while choosing — flashes like a X-Mas tree. Only starters and people who have no idea what each mode does need this  — c'mon, some of us are using blend modes creatively and need to test settings! It is fine, better than PS! (Though some modes seem to be missing.)

The “Transparent Background" can’t be set to default — Please make this sticky!

Most other things in the list are as said but not critical in my workflow (or I have not had yet time for critical need for them, next project may prove otherwise.. :-D)
