marco_chacon Posted June 29, 2023 Posted June 29, 2023 Hi, I'm sure this is in here somewhere--but I can't find it. I have my content in Google Docs. I want to link it to my Affinity Publisher document so that the text from various files fills in the text boxes, etc. How do I do that? Quote
GarryP Posted June 29, 2023 Posted June 29, 2023 You cannot ‘link’ to text in another file. You need to either type it in, or use copy/paste, or import it (from certain file types only). You can search the Help for import text for more information. Quote
marco_chacon Posted June 29, 2023 Author Posted June 29, 2023 So . . . huh. Okay, I thought the best-practice was to do all the content creation in a word processor . . . and then do layout in the publisher. But if I have to constantly cut and paste that's not so good, no? Am I missing something? Quote
marco_chacon Posted June 29, 2023 Author Posted June 29, 2023 It looks like the answer is PLACE from the File menu. (Imagine me ranting about how intuitive that is). Now I need to figure out how to flow text around picture frames . . . Quote
Staff NathanC Posted June 29, 2023 Staff Posted June 29, 2023 Hi @marco_chacon, If you export your Google drive document to a .DOCX file in Google Drive via the 3 dot menu under 'Download' this should automatically start a download of your document to your default downloads folder, this .DOCX file can then be file > placed into an existing Publisher document, where you can adjust the text and auto-flow it (if required). I've linked a couple of relevant help guides below on supported file formats and text auto flow for more info. Supported file formats: https://affinity.help/publisher2/English.lproj/pages/Appendix/fileformat.html Auto Flow: https://affinity.help/publisher2/English.lproj/pages/Text/flowingText.html Quote
marco_chacon Posted June 29, 2023 Author Posted June 29, 2023 I got that working (thanks to finding Place in a note--not Import or Link . . .) Now: I have a Picture Frame that I put on my document (I have a master page template applied). I want to have the text flow around the image. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that having the text FLOW around the image isn't what I want. What do I want? Quote

You want Text Wrap. https://affinity.help/publisher2/en-US.lproj/pages/Text/wrapText.html Quote -- Walt Designer, Photo, and Publisher V1 and V2 at latest retail and beta releases PC: Desktop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 64GB memory, AMD Ryzen 9 5900 12-Core @ 3.00 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Laptop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 32GB memory, Intel Core i7-10750H @ 2.60GHz, Intel UHD Graphics Comet Lake GT2 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU. marco_chacon Posted June 29, 2023 Author Posted June 29, 2023 Is there a way to "regenerate" Placed text? Or do I have to delete the placed text and place it again? Quote
walt.farrell Posted June 29, 2023 Posted June 29, 2023 Just now, marco_chacon said: Or do I have to delete the placed text and place it again? This one, if by "regenerate" you mean "replace" with the original file. marco_chacon Posted June 29, 2023 Author Posted June 29, 2023 Okay--so I Place the file from a .docx today. Then edits are made to the .docx file. Those do NOT get propagated to the Affinity Publisher file unless I go in and delete and Place again, yes? Quote

And doing that loses any changes you might have made to the text (formatting, or actual text changes) in Publisher. So, today, it may be better, if you can, to "freeze" the original file and stop updating it. Users have asked for true "linked" text files, that would auto-update, but we have no way of knowing if Serif will ever provide that given the complexity of the issues involved. marco_chacon 1 Quote -- Walt Designer, Photo, and Publisher V1 and V2 at latest retail and beta releases PC: Desktop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 64GB memory, AMD Ryzen 9 5900 12-Core @ 3.00 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Laptop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 32GB memory, Intel Core i7-10750H @ 2.60GHz, Intel UHD Graphics Comet Lake GT2 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU. marco_chacon Posted June 29, 2023 Author Posted June 29, 2023 Is there a way to have a table overlap two columns? I want to have the table on the right appear on the left--but keep its dimensions. How would I do that? Quote

You can Pin the table to the left-hand column then use Text Wrap to flow the columns text around it Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. Old Bruce Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 Alternatively you can just put the table manually on the page, not pinned to the text, on the page and apply Text Wrap to it. Personally I would not pin a table like that to the text, it may well cause problems.
