option to use layer/filter in menu when raw is file open

Recommended Posts

I m a fairly new user of Affinity and still learning the many features of the program, but am enjoying the experience nonetheless. There is one area that is causing me some frustration. When I open a raw file (select, File., open  and file that I have exported to Affinity specific folder), I can perform most editing functions from the options on the right panel.

However, after watching I training video about using a layer and sharpening mask i went to open either "Layer" or "Filter" from pull down menu, but both options were not present.

Without a file open, My menu shows from left to right: File, Edit, Text, Layer, Document, Select, Arrange, Filters, View, Window, Help.

With a file open the Menu show:  File, Edit, View, Window, Help. (see attached screen shot)

Of course with the few options I am limited to what I can do. Any ideas? All options on Studio are checked and have been reset, but I understand they relate to the right panel anyway. Any help would be most welcome.

Hello expat1 and welcome to the forums
Looking at your attached photo I see that you are in the Develop persona. You will need to finish up your raw adjustments and leave the Develop persona first before you can access “Layers” and “Filters” from the Menubar.

You should see something like this from the menu bar:

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Hi Richard gold,
After you have developed the RAW file, you have to click the blue Develop button to move/switch to Photo Persona for localised edits. This is where you find the Layers panel. It's not a "JPG mode", the file was not converted to any specific format at this point - it's just data stored in memory. You only do that (convert to a specific format) when you export the file using File > Export. To learn a bit more about Personas check this video tutorial.

There's a full set of video tutorials that may help you get acquainted with the app here.

Mr. MEB,

Thank you again. To get the most out of my RAW files I open them in Digital Photo Professional where I correct WB and use a few other sliders. I then pick a format before exiting (TIFF or JPEG). When either format is opened in Affinity there is no LAYERS choice. I can go from Develop to Persona but there still is no LAYERS choice. Bummer. Does this make any sense?

Just discovered that even with a JPEG file there is no LAYERS option. Sounds like something basic I am doing wrong. Nice, more time to waste fixing this. I will get back if I can fix this.

Hello Richard and welcome to the Affinity forums:)
Perhaps if you could post some screenshots of what you are seeing that might help pinpoint the issue.
